People had been asking for screenshots and video of the Android build:

A pretty cool review all in all. Don't mind the occasional inaccuracy: this is a guy experiencing VO for the very first time on a Xoom, and only for a few hours, and then having to do a review on it. I think he did a pretty good job. Also, this review should be considered in the context that we are practically the first really hardcore game released for Android. I mean, Dungeon Defenders is somewhat hardcore, but we're kind of a different.. strata. So, viewed from the perspective of people who have mostly played Angry Birds or Robo Defense, reactions to the somewhat jarring differences in gameplay depth and learning curve are to be expected.

For those who want to know: F/A is the default, but Physic Mode is still an option, easily toggleable with the Android "menu" button on the bottom towards the left side. So you can still move backwards. Toggling on the tablet is very useful on the tablet, in my opinion. Some people have always done that on PC, but it's vastly more useful on a touchscreen.

The game launcher/updater does not take 5-10 minutes, or even 30 seconds, to finish on any device of mine. It finishes faster than that on my Droid 1.. even when there is a patch. I'm concerned that he hit some kind of bug we've never seen, so I'm following up with him on that. I have not seen any significant difference in patching/verifying time vs PC, at least on Tegra hardware.

Also, most of the buttons have alternate definitions. If you touch and hold on them, it pops up a selection set of other options. Like holding "target" pops up the whole list of "target" types (nearest enemy, object in front, enemy in front, and so on). Holding "mission" pops up alternates for Nav and Cargo (jettison), etc. Basically a selection of what I found to be important when I was playing, but optimally this will all become more configurable.

I also wanted to move towards more of a "flower" context-selection concept for buttons, where touching and holding would pop out four alternates at up/down/left/right, making for minimum motion with the thumb, but that isn't in place yet.

Anyway, take a look.

He should have read the 100 snippets captured in those images more carefully.

...I play this game specifically because it's nothing like WoW.

I like the part where he tries to fire his gun but has nothing equipped. Close second to "150 miles per second" and "going to another galaxy."

But more seriously, now, how does the player roll? Tilting the screen?
Mar 10, 2011 incarnate link
We don't have roll or vertical-strafe bound to anything by default right now. I didn't want to overwhelm people with controls. But we may add roll as an accelerometer (tilt) function. Tilt controls can be kind of obnoxious though, so we'll see how that shakes out.

Hehe that's pretty cool, gratz on getting on a forth platform.

If I get a taplet at some point I'll be sure to check out VO again(again) :)

Hey everybody! I had bought a xoom as a replacement for my dying laptop, and downloaded VO from Android Market. I've been gaming off and on for twenty five years, and the xoom interface is one of the best i've seen. Back end is flawless, i've run into ZERO bugs. The accelerometer mlementation is great. Considering the xoom has NO tactile buttons, the team at VO has done an incredible job packing in controls without overwhelming the user interface. I know its a process, and look forward to the tweaks that will be coming through (eager to see the "flowering" buttons for more control options). Some blank touch areas for binding, maybe?

I just read that a iPhone game "Galaxy on Fire 2" is (or will be) released onto the Xoom as well. I think it's just single player so I hope it doesn't intrude into VO's success on Android.

YnotElbon: Thanks! Glad to hear you've had a good experience thus far. We are continually working to improve it.

Kunari: We're good friends with the Fish Labs guys. GoF (2) is a great game, and it is single-player only.

Considering that VO is the 3rd app on the "Featured Tablet Apps" you can't get better market exposure.

It could be the 2nd or 1st app.
