Large slot problem

Jan 27, 2015 valandur link
I'm a fairly new player, so this might be an issue of me not understanding some part of the game. But I'm having a problem with items working in the large addon slot on ships. My stats are 2/2/1/2/2. I've tried both the Revenant and the Titan, trying to fit both a Plasma Eliminator or a Mining Beam in the large slots along with a Med Power Cell. In all cases they go into the large slot, but the icon is tinted red and when I click on it, the description says the item is inoperable in that slot...?

Oddly, when I lost a ship and clicked repurchase last ship, the Eliminator icon appeared and wasn't tinted red, until I clicked on it. Both items on both ships do not function in space, for battle nor mining.

What am I doing wrong???

Thanks!

All addons have a 'grid power' requirement and each power cell has a different grid power capacity. Simply put, if your grid power requirement exceeds the grid power capacity of your power cell then you can't fit that combination on the ship because the cell can't power it.

It's a balance feature that's not documented very well, not a surprise you missed it. Large port plasma guns are notoriously grid power hungry. I'd suggest trying a megaposi instead or maybe a gatling turret.

Hi Valandur
All except 2 powercells have 20 grid power for the equipped items. All but widowmaker, HE mining beam and capship weaponry require 4 grid power to operate. Check if you try to equip a small port weapon to a large port (it won't work) or vice versa. I doubt, that in case of revenant you would exceed the total grid power of a standard powercell. Also check if you have the correct levels to equip that specific weapon. You can do this on the weapons stats window in the inventory.

If you have grid overload, you'll see lighting symbols on all slots. Simple red means you 're trying to equip small port item to large or vice versa. And definitely the item wont stay on the port, it'll be returned to your inventory.

I hope I yould help.

p.s.: I cannot recall any ship named Titan in VO. Are you referring the CEntaur or the Behemoth? Both are named after mythologic creatures. Erm.... Your levels don't allow you to have a behemoth... yet...

I think he's referring to the Atlas, and I think his problem is not grid, but the little popup that shows when you have a port selected and also a weapon selected that doesn't go in that port. Just drag large port weapons to the large port, and try using right mouse to fire secondary weapons (or fire 2 on mobile? dunno about that). It's possible you just had a small port weapon in your inventory selected when you also had the large port selected and that was giving you the error. If the weapon is shown in your ship it should work.

RedSpy has not played in so long he has forgotten that all large port plasma weapons are 4 grid (and grid is a nonissue) except in the case of the annihilator, which has requirements far too high for a newbie to access. He also evidently doesn't remember that gatling turrets aren't available until heavy level 5, and megaposis require a queen badge.

Hey, thanks for the replies. Yes, it was an Atlas I was talking about, Duh. I think some of my problem might be that I'm playing from an IPad? The wording on the Plasma Eliminator says it auto fires, but it doesn't on my ships. I've double checked the item, and the slot to make sure I'm fitting a large slot item into a large slot and I am. The items do fit into the slot, but on screen they are tinted red unlike my small slot weapons or mining gear which don't have a tint. On the Rev my grid usage shows at 12/20 so I think I'm good...?

Kind of thinking the IPad is the issue here.

Hi,

Yeah, Atlas was one of the titans!

Other topic: if you have a small port selected, then any large port weapon/item will be designated as not fit. But if you drag them and drop on the large port icon it will be equipped. If you cannot equip that item on your ship due to level insufficiency, you won't be able to drop that item on the icon displayed on the ship's schematics.

EDIT:
Nay.... you have enough level to equip a plasma eliminator.... Post a screen dump so we see what you see. Or submit a support ticket to devs, so they get notification on a possible bug.

End EDIT

If you can see the item equipped, then its tint is irrelevant.

Autofire, if I understand correctly, only applies to the primary trigger. If you want to fire the weapon, you'll have to either manually operate the secondary trigger (I think it was the blue button?) or else use the "Groups" section of the ship configuration area to reassign the large-port to the primary group.

Ah, wondered what that blue button was for! I will check that and look for 2ed weap configure in Options. Thanks!

Umm, any idea how to take a SS with an IPad? Heh, I'll check options and see if it says how I can do it.
CC on the support ticket.
Thanks!

Ok, I solved my problem! It was an issue with me using an IPad. The blue button does work to fire the secondary weapon.

There's still the issue, which I'm unsure is caused by my using an IPad, of the large slot item being tinted red, and when you select it you see a message saying "this item is not operable in the current slot" or something to that effect. I get this message in the "Ship" section using the "Configure" button where I can add/remove Addons. It appears in the description area below the Addons in your storage (center panel)

If its a known bug, no biggie. If not, I can bug it. But, the normal SS command for a PC is F12. The IPad doesn't have a keyboard, it appears and vanishes when you click the chat section so I don't have F keys. Is there an IPad commands page? If there's a manual SS command, I can macro it and take a Ss that way...?

Thanks for the help! Pretty cool game. Waaaaay better then any space game I've found available for the IPad!

Hi,

Just type /dump in the chat line.

The problem is that when you equip an item, your selection goes back to the top item in the right pane. The top item has a 66%chance of being a different port type tan the one you are looking at. Click the item once and you will see the port as available.

Here it is: You drag the thing in, and the client automatically calculates the compatibility of the next thingamabob. The red means that the thing in the station is incompatible, not that the thing in the slot is incompatible.
Noob, huh? Hope we bump into each other someday. I hang out at TPG head in Dau...
