VO vs EVE article.

Interesting:

On some level, I'm flattered that people are still comparing the 4-developer game to the.. gazillion-developer game (one of the CCP co-founders told me they peaked around 600 people? but across multiple games).

They also don't mention the whole.. VO-on-mobile thing. And probably were using the DX9 renderer. Ah well.

Here is what I wrote:

Too bad you had to compare these two in “versus” mode; no doubt they are both excellent games that (as you point out) have stood the test of time.

I’ve been a part of Vendetta Online’s community, and a steady player, since June 2003. For me, the combat is one of many things that make it a memorable game that deserves laud and mention. I’ve written much more on different aspects I appreciate about Vendetta on the site mmorpg.com:

To me, the combat in Vendetta is less about being a “shooter” and more of a martial art in space. Facing one’s opponent requires twitch skills, yes, but it also requires using one’s momentum in an efficient manner, using an opponent’s weaknesses against him/her; there is much strategy to it.

There is also that it is maintained by a group of 4 devs from Milwaukee; truly a “David versus Goliath” scenario if you are to look at it as such.

The fact that this is one of the few, if not the first, true MMORPG that you can play seamlessly cross-platform has made it the right choice for me over the last 3 years, and that it has been a coruscating experience in a dynamic space sandbox for the 9 years prior to that.

Again, a shame that you must “pit” these two unforgettable games “against” each other, as they no doubt each have something unique and irreplaceable to offer in their own rights.

I read the article and it was not plesant.
You cannot compare EVE to Vendetta Online. While you are right with saying that EVE is being run by a much larger amount of people, incarnate, the only thing that these 2 games have in common is the setting in space. None of these many people coding EVE managed to make a game with the same charme Vendetta has. Even when life is busy, I log in to play a bit in the evening and it is very enjoyable to let the day end that way. Much more enjoyable than staring at my screen while letting my PC play EVE for me.

I'd also like to add that this reviewer is not neutral. He has stated to have played EVE for a while already and telling by the screenshot he sent from VO it appears he hasn't even played far enough to evaluate VO.. All I see is a screenshot where he sits in a freebus firing on an Orun Collecter in Sol. It may be from an early stage from his test, but I've seen "expert-revievers" do this to VO before. Just a year or two ago I read a review on VO and it turned out the author hadn't even left the training sector.

Don't mind stupid reviews. Keep the good work going, guys.
I have likewise commented on the site.

Yeah, it is not a very good review. Not even worth a thread here imo

Its good exposure for VO.

Of course people know that EVE is a huge enterprise and if they're going to play it they probably won't be doing much else with their life. Part of the reason that people come here is they're looking to get away from EVE.

The premise of the article that people are going to toss up between the two is pretty stupid. There's nobody in that situation.

A good summary of the essence of the article would be: EVE is a huge space MMO which doesn't have better combat than this tiny one that 4 people made.

I was an EVE beta tester, but I left them for Vendetta many years ago and have never looked back.

I tried EVE for 6 weeks last summer. It was more like having a job than playing a game.

The complaints about VO's graphics would probably stand even if they tested it with the DX11 or GL4 renderers. All the fancy lights and shaders in the galaxy can't make the Atlas not look like something out of the 1990's.

At least they hit the nail on the head about combat. :)

Meh, I was also in the beta for EvE, just never grabbed me at all. Like others have said, the only simaler aspect is that both games are set in space.

Pointless to compare, pointless to write too. People that spent years playing EvE would not be the kind of players that stick around in VO. I do not think I could say the opposite but VO is really niche, no matter how great I think it is.

When I read the article, the only thing I could think was that I was reading something written to be an advertisement for Eve.

This comparison between VO and EVE is like comparing milk and mayo, both belong in the kitchen, but you just ain't eating cereal with mayo :~)

Whether we like the comparison or not, it's a valid comparison, with both games being the dominant space combat games at the moment. It's true that the author glossed over a lot of things in VO, but he is right in the fact that you can explore in a single night. Our universe is nowhere near as expansive and we are lacking in the player economy that Eve has. These are areas Inc has on the agenda I believe, but they are areas we cannot simply discount by calling Eve a spreadsheet.

I just read the EVE backstory and it's a lot like the VO backstory.
