making Wormholes more dangerous

What if we allowed players to use other players' jumpgates? Ideally, what would happen is that you would be close to a outgoing wormhole (say 100m) as it opened, and you would be sucked in, involuntarily. You would have the option to boost away, but if you chose not to, you would (hopefully) end up in the same sector as the person who opened it. Due to the fact that sectors load at different speeds for all of us, this could be a dangerous venture. One would want to practice this maneuver with someone who has a slower loading time than themself, b/c once the first person is thru, the wormhole closes, shutting off everything inside. (i.e. you) You would lose your ship, cargo, and weapons to the unknown in that case. Otherwise, you'd end up in the destination sector ahead of the person. This maneuver would not require ANY energy, as you would not be opening the wormhole.

The theory behind this is that what we currently define as wormholes are a black hole and a white hole connected through subspace. If you look carefully in the animation when you open a wormhole at a speed of zero m/s, you will notice that the ship still moves forward, as if it were being pulled toward the wormhole. IMO, this means that it is a black hole you are entering.

This would be a good tactic for defending flags when the cap party has gotten to teh worm hole, you don't need to lose your energy, but at risk of losing your ship. You would, as I said earlier, arrive before the one who opened the wormhole and have as much energy as you did when you enterd the wormhole.

Comments? Suggestions? Donations? ^^

I like the idea, but not the losing the ship part...
"Scuba Steve 9.0's ship was lost to the void..."
hmmmm......expensive consequences...

What we need is a void sector, a very hazardous sector with fast spinning shrapnel of rocks, in the center is where you pop up, and to get out you need to hunt down a randomly occurring wormhole.

To get in you need to do something stupid like say make a wormhole if your battery isn't fully charged, it would be possible for the wormhole to collapse and your in this very dangerous area, great hiding place for flag carrier. :)

Edit: To make me not look like an idiot.

"I like the idea, but not the losing the ship part..."

so? where's the risk otherwise? ya gotta have a chance of losing SOMETHING. And besides, you didn't open the wormhole, so you have no control over when it shuts. Meaning you could get stuck in subspace, aka the void.

oooo make the void have like 1k bunty bots floating around, and trying to find that hidden wormhole o_0

/me likes Celkan's idea because the devs always jump to sector 0 in his face... :D

While true that it would make pirating easier... remember that there would be great risk for the pirate attempting to follow the the first player.

Hmmm...so that means I could leech off someone else's wormhole to not need a full battery to jump.
This would make pirating easier...especially cross-sector pursuit.

I'd use it to fling flag cappers back into my home sector again and again.

I do like the void idea though, thats pretty cool. Fill it with lost cargo and open a whole new pursuit - salvage.

How about just send the players to s0? :P

... I really love the void idea.

Imagine getting your cargo hauling pizza cutter accidentaly getting sucked into a wormhole with his batteries empty, ending up in a dangerous area with a wormhole that only opens when somebody else gets sucked in...

There should be some cargo floating around, large wrecked capital ships instead of asteroids, an abandoned space station, a no star background with a big red haunting sun in the background and some really really nasty "Void native" space monsters (Big organic looking AI bots) that hunts you and tries to eat you...

*drools* Stuck in a dead end with the only exit being someone else entering...

This void sucking should only happen if you get sucked in and you have less than 25% of your energy left or something like that, to prevent everyone from being sucked into the void.

Ummm... interesting idea.... but it should be based on loading time. That would give people who have better computers/faster connections intrinsically different game play, because they couldn't reach the void... but could pirate much better.

I like your veiw on your void eldred, but may i ask, what will be in the abandoned station?
Apr 27, 2003 Nemesis link
That was not Eldrad, it was me.

Well... Maybe you could get scrap metal and stuff like that for free, repair your ship for free, and otherwise pretty much nothing except hiding from the space beasts...

Well, I accually have no idea, but it would be cool as hell.

The void should have derelict stations that you can dock at.
No sun
No stars
The derelict station docks have low damage creatures sitting in there waiting for someone to dock, like 100 dmg per shot, 2 shots per second.
Station's lights are broken also =)
Big mean lurking monsters.
Bigger meaner corpses to hide in (yuck)

ahh, a big scary sector with a hidden but easy to find station with creatures sitting in the docks, no light what so ever, except for weapons fire, and you would need to team up to leave =P

And maybe there will be old out dated banned weapons you can get from a crazy old merchant.

"And maybe there will be old out dated banned weapons you can get from a crazy old merchant."

YES!!! w00t!

Best idea yet
Apr 27, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
Yes, but we will need police bots (not in the void of course, if they were there they would of been eaten) to attack you if you have illegal weapons. :)

Lets try to sum out the noninsain ideas that have come out of this.

1) If someone is warping and you follow too closely, you cam get sucked in, but keep full power because you didn't open the wormhole.

2) There is a chance of you going to a "void" sector full of old stuff
I say make it like a 1 in 5 chance

3) This sector is full of old stuff, suck as busted up ships and stations and deadly space beasts.

4) it's hard to get out alive.

I like hte idea!!! a1, what are your thoughts?
Apr 27, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
Remember, you should be able to open wormholes ___No mater how much energy you have___;
0-24%===80% void
25-49%===60% void
50-74%===40% void
75-99%===20% void
100%-100%===0% void (duh)
This would be good for people who need to run, as in NOW, but there is a big problem with unstable wormholes. =)

And it should say in the chat "Welcome to the void, I hope you enjoy your stay!"

Did I finally have a good idea that was tweaked by everyone? wow...
Well I just came up with the void idea because just dieing is no fun!

The beasts should target like this:
Name: Unknown Creature
Bounty: 100000
Nation: Creatures you never want to lay eyes on.

Devs, any thoughts?

"2) There is a chance of you going to a "void" sector full of old stuff
I say make it like a 1 in 5 chance"

1 in 5 doesn't cut it Urza. the chances are SOLELY based upon sector loading times. If A opens a wormhole and B enters 2 seconds after A does, and B takes 10 seconds to load sector 'x' while A takes 20, B will arrive in sector x with the amount of energy he/she had before the jump, AND 8 seconds AHEAD of A.

On the other hand... if A took only 9 seconds to load sector x, then B would be dropped in subspace, ie, the 'void' as we are calling it. This would require one to know the other person's computer speed in order to avoid going to (or to get to) the void.
