(Yet another) interesting weapon idea: Laser Boomerang.

Laser Boomerang
(s) slot weapon
Damage: 1600 (yes I know that can quad-kill a bus, so can sunflares)
Speed: 160m/s
Range: 220m
Energy: 60
Ammo: 1*
Repeat: Would vary, although generally it would take about 4-5 seconds.

So this weapon flies out like a regular ion weapon, except its in the shape of a boomerang and spinning (heh heh). After 1.5 seconds, if the boomerang hasn't hit anything, it would fly back to the ship that fired it as a smart homer. *Once it returned to the firing ship, it could be fired again after a 1 second delay (to avoid spamming at close range). If the boomerang did hit something, it would do 1600 damage and then fly back to the firing ship.

It would be nice to give this weapon a "spinning" sound as it passed by, just add a flange to the regular ion effect.

*WUMWUMWumWumwumwum....... .......wumwumWumWumWUMWUM*

I like it, but it seems it would be really hard to use. It should fly in a big arc instead of straight ahead to make it make sense. But how would it work? Boomerangs come back only due to air resistance. There is none of that in space.

Yeah, too bad there's no bats in space, either, or you could stun them and then kill them with your sword.

What about gloves of might? Can we use those to pick up 'roids and chuck them at enemies?
Heh heh

ROFL @ a1k0n! This is too wacky of an idea, sorry. How would you ensure that the boomerang would perfectly go back into its weapon port? A tether/grappler/tow weapon? Maybe. A boomerang? Ermm... no.

I dunno, I actually think that'd be sorta cool. Like a bot which stores an enormous amount of charge which it dissipates into its target, but then it needs to return to your ship right away to recharge.

I know! I know! This particular weapon has a special laser-boomerang receptactle. So if you shoot another player who is also missing his boomerang, they take no damage and pick your boomerang up! :P

edit: or, yeah, what a1k0n said makes sense.

Hmmmm.... /me shoots a couple of these out (3 to be exact). Then continues to dodge them so they don't ever return. Then flies near another ship... ok so this wouldn't actually be an exploit seeing as it probably would be less effective than the weapons used as they are supposed to but it'd sure be fun.

On a more serious note... You should get rid of the 1 second fire delay, and instead give it a 2 second repeat rate (ie if they pick it up exactly at the end of it's outwards flight they would have to wait .5seconds to fire again).

For some reason this one doesn't do anything for me.

ya know, the boomerang wasnt actually supposed to come back. it was ment for hunting, yes. but when it hit somthing, it stayed there. it wasnt until some dude came up with the idea to make it possable for the boomerang to fly back, so he could sell it as a toy and make millions....MILLIONS I SAY!so yea, it was pretty much a fast moving, curved "stick" but it worked :)

I dunno... It seems kinda tacky to me. Especially the part about having a potentially deadly blob of energy coming back at you. What I think would be pretty neat would be an energy net weapon. You drop three bouys in a triangle, and they project an energy field that traps and damages anything caught between them. Mainly like a trap. You leave the bouys in space, drop some cargo in the center, some unsuspecting player comes by to grab the cargo and the pirate activates the (highly visible) web. If he/she activates the web too early, the target could potentially escape, and if it's too late, then they miss the target complete. Sorta like the old lightning mines, just less brainless. And netting a station grants automatic KOS in all affiliated systems. Say you're +1000 Serco and you net a station. Say good bye to your Serco status.
