Rats have the Advantage

Ok, how about this: I read all tutorials and mission logs without exception when I was a noob, but the following info is totally not available:

* what are standings and how do they affect your survival against griefers,
* how incompetent are the NFZ guards and how safe you should (not) feel in a NFZ,
* how do you grind proc missions to reach admired in a ridiculously short time, and how does griefers/pirates abuse it,
* how to be vigilant about which sector you are in, like whether it is monitored, guarded or unmonitored, and by which faction.
* absolue necessity of using targetless (and/or other reporting plugins) if you want to spot a potantiel griefer before poped up like a melon.

If the game can at least tech these to a new player, or preferably solve NFZ issues by:

* improving AI to prevent cross-fire exploits,
* giving a gradual penality even if the griefed isn't PoS or admired,
* giving all players at the station sector permission to attack the aggressor(s) without any penalities,
* making the temp KoS timer tick even after the aggressor is killed,
* making the penality and standing recovery worse for notorious pirates/griefers.

Here are the problems I see and actual suugestions for their solutions.

These are not items the game should have to teach you. These are things that should be learned. Don't be lazy. Also, no plugin is an absolute necessity. Try turning on the Proximity Warning provided on the Sensor Log.

TRS, I knew that you found a more suitable game for yourself as we don't see you in game, I'm happy that hello kitty advantures is fiting you.

Peytros, new players don't know that 1 and 100 might actually be helpful, because player base of most games are not friendly. It took me ages to trust anyone talking on 100. I saved many griefed players myself by making them my gunner and cruising to safety, but it's hard for them to trust me while a douchbag is using them as punching bags.

And draugath, you can uninstall all the plugins you use if you want and see if you will be able to play with the standard interface effectively for only one week. And I'm sure folk resisted the current tutorials when they are first introduced, branding them as redundant, but they are not.

I played for about a week without any plugins last summer. It wasn't a big deal. And when I first started playing I didn't install any plugins at all until at least three months in. You just set your prox alarm and pop up the sector list from time to time, piece of cake. That was a more dangerous time than today, by the way.

Also: nobody resisted the tutorials.

Oh, and cut it out with trying to act like we're wrong for fighting in a fighting game. Seriously. Do you bitch when somebody shoots you in Halo? Do you complain when you lose a rook in Chess? Grow up. The game's name is "Vendetta" for a reason. You're supposed to get killed by the more experienced players. Then you learn how to fight and seek vengeance. Duh.

I do like this:
* making the temp KoS timer tick even after the aggressor is killed...

The idea of a "cool-down" KoS sits well with me. Might be trouble with things like buswars/furballs in D-14 though

I'm not talking about myself, but new players. Dynamics of VO are quite different than most mmo, which requires giving a good perspective to the new players. Gee, why are everyone replying to me like I'm wining for myself?

Whether you are whining for yourself or on behalf of others has no bearing on whether the whines are valid.
Nov 10, 2013 TheRedSpy link
New players need to be taught the control systems of VO, they don't need to be taught carebear ideology or be socially indoctrinated to play the game a certain way. It's a sandbox game and they are told that from the outset.

My suggestions doesn't create players like my preferred stereotype, it teaches the dynamics to new players, which everyone uses, from traders to rats.

Ok, lets the devs decide then whether this topic is important or not.

And return to your hello kitty advantures TRS.

If you can't see how that ridiculous list of suggestions inserts your own agenda into the tutorial system you need to be keelhauled or something.

my 2c

remove sector/station turrets
remove NFZ

cos' they are confusin' n00bs by givin' 'em a sense of false security and are responsible fer makin' 'em ragequit.

oh and I like the 300m/s LENB idea btw, but with same damage and maybe less drain so i can kill newbs faster with it.

oh and i am doin' dat fer meself, others can still kiss my pegged leg btw.

oh and YARRRR! btw.

I've already forgotten part of what was discussed in this thread, and I didn't want to re-read it, but keep in mind that this is a PvP game and you can be killed anywhere. Perhaps this needs to be clarified somewhere so that new players understand this. However, if they're quitting after only being killed once or twice, then this probably wasn't the game for them anyway. It should also be noted that the balance for UIT starting out neutral with Serco and Itani is that their space is fractured and they have to do a lot more faction standing work to be protected in every station sector throughout.

In trying to make some space safer, it would be detrimental to the game if it were impossible to kill people in station sectors or other guarded sectors. What needs to happen is the repercussions for being aggressive in such sectors be stricter. Part of what was discussed was making the strike force (that protect sectors from aggressors) stronger in some way.

Something else that I think needs to happen is that the strike force needs to be able to differentiate aggressors from defenders. Right now they're very strict in that anyone that damages another ship is subject to terminal prosecution. It's only natural that if you get attacked you would want to defend yourself, and many real-life jurisdictions make allowances for self-defense (though typically after the fact).

In addition to easing NFZ penalties for defenders, perhaps there should be a sector-wide message alerting occupants to the threat and telling the aggressor to leave.
