Shields

Extend shield capabilities to behemoth class ships, cos they are too easy to kill.

Actually i'd love a shield implementation for basic ships but basically have it work kind of like the shields for Halo.

Gives protection for say, 5,000 damage but doesnt regen until 50 seconds of not being hit. If it drops completely then it will reappear at full strength after 50 seconds. Could be an addon or a seperate ship that way you get a little bit of durability against glancing attackers so you're more defensible, but ultimately if someones going to shoot you consistently, you're dead.

+1....for XC's shield ...the only defenseless ship in game...

-1 to ever giving the XC a shield of any kind... While we're at it, let's cut some armor off. 200cu is a lot of space.

pfft, the XC could have double the armour it has now. Who gives a crap, it's helpless as all hell you can kill it with just about any ship and any basic blaster that isn't a training blaster.

The whole point of the XC is the risk vs reward trade-off of being defenseless, but having a larger cargo capacity. Now if that balance is off, then I'm fine with tweaking things. But let's not lose sight of the fundamental point of the trade-off. I'm not looking to make everything "awesome".

@ incarnate. Yes, the balance is completely off. The XC needs 400 cube cargo space and a 150 increase in turbo thrust to accommodate the additional weight.

Just saying...

I'd support letting behemoths have shields if there were a mechanic to turn them on and off, and it impacted energy drain to have them on. Actually, that sounds good for tridents too, now that I think about it.

Some serious consideration should be made toward some sort of energy style shielding. The following is a direct quote from the official VO backstory, 'Chronicles of Exile':
"AD3816

The technology of monitoring and focusing the energy of a meditative monk has been further refined to produce an intriguing device. The so-called "Energy Focus" can be used by a highly trained monk to produce a seemingly impenetrable field, formed from a variety of spiritual life energies. The form of this field is adaptable by the thoughts of the monk, depending on the skill and abilities of the individual. The discovery is hailed as opening a new field of science, but few immediate applications are found. Many of the upper level members of the Order acquire Energy Focus devices for experimentation and as teaching tools, to give form to thought and aid in conceptual description."

And also in AD3830, Serco Prime, final paragraph, "Advancements are made in energy studies, monks can now easily fly a ship and control an Energy Focus at the same time"

According to the official backstory even the average Itani developed some skill at utilizing these Energy Focus devices to varying degree. Therefore while someone in a fighter(even a monk) would more than likely be to focused on purely fighting to be able concentrate on the "Energy Focus" those piloting ships intended primarily for mining and cargo hauling would have no problem conentrating enough on the device to produce such an effect as suggested by the OP.

I'm opposed to having shields on Class-C ships (Behemoth and smaller). Class-A (HAC and Constellation) and Class-B (Trident and Teradon) obviously were designed for the role.

While there is precedent in other fiction for Class-C ships with shields, I feel that on smaller ships they are just a bit too gimicky. Just like shields in other FPS games (e.g. Halo). Even supposing they were to be added, it's my opinion that they should only have ~1000 hitpoints, unless you intend to also revisit current armor values. Systems/Utility port addons should also be available to enhance shield capacity and recharge rates, and/or serve as the method of equipping said shields.

cos they are too easy to kill.

You've obviously never gone up against a battle-moth. Bring some friends along as gunners or escorts.

I could see trading a large port for shields, so long as there was an energy drain.

Then someone needs to let John know his story needs a rewrite.

To be honest, if we were to add a new system which required 2 Lports to mount, but provided a generatable shield, that should serve to countenance some of the suggestions. I think it'd make an interesting addition at least.

I say 2, Nahin, because it just seems odd that so many fighters and mid-level ships would be able to mount them if only a single Lport. I DO agree it should come with a power requirement which was higher when recharging the shields.

lulz, mission accomplished.

Pup, go back to your doghouse and sit. Comments contrary to effective discussion are not only counterproductive, they are unnecessary and possibly unwanted.

DS, partial thread necrosis aside, the idea of creating some type of shield system for smaller ships (and requiring a decent enough drain to make it a serious consideration as to whether one should mount it or not) is still a valid conversation. Not sure that making light of it is actually productive.
