Big flaw!

Jun 25, 2004 lunitary link
Ok, as you can guess this thread is about a flaw (IMO) in the game.

the combat missions!

in the 3.4 version i hated them because they were'nt so rewarding and i had'nt the time to invest myself in the combat (school) or the will to chase bots for hours and hours at a time.

now, in this version it's unbearable! i just got 5 bots for a lousy 150xp in heavy weapons! (light weapons 210ex)
that's nothing comparing to the fact that i took only 10 minutes to find the recon bot (in the arta system, sector K-12 if you wana know), after that i killed one droneII in k-12, and after that for each bot i had to make 1, if not 2 jumps.
not to talk about the fact that in sector K-12 it took me enough time just to find the recon bot.

now, this is all, not all must like botting. but the big flaw here is that it's needed! from what i understand from other players (and some older threads) you need a combinations of lvls in either combat and trading to get the good equipment, such as FC battary.

i hope you plan to change this because a new player who will come to this, and will see that he gets no where with the bots will be frustrated!

true, we, the testers, are aware how good things can get thus making us not satisfied with the less good things. but still, being stuck with the same equipment for long times is no fun.

yes, there is a veraiety of ships, weapons and battries, never the less, a player will chose the best he has for combat or trading and nothing else. that limits the choises alot! at first you advanse fast, but after a very short lvling it's super slow! now, i'm not saying it should be fast, but the change between each lvl should'nt be so dramatic.
it's like giving a baby one ice cream a day. when he gets a month older you give him ice creem once every 2 days. when he gets another 2 month older you give him ice creem once a every 2 weeks, and after another 4 month you give him only once every 2 month. it's too trastic!

now, about the missions them selfs, a way i see to solve that problem is to make it so you have a varaiety of bots in each sector, and the computer choses one of those types for you to kill untill your reward. after you got your reward it will tell you to find some type of bot, but in a deferent sector etc'...

I concur.

/me yawns, we're testing concepts, not tweaking numbers here.

I could not agree more !!!
I read SOMEWHERE that Vendetta is supposed to be, above all else FUN. And this was the writing of one of the Devs. The process of "leveling up" is NOT fun. It is boring, tedious and tortureous. And to add insult to injury, we are micromanaged
through the process. Rather than getting an assignment like: "find and kill 3 drone II bots, 5 Sentry bots and 1 Transport I bot, we are told at each step what to do (but not where to do it). The amount of time required to fullfill the mission
is rediculous, and has become worse by two or three orders of magntude in the new universe. And, these tasks are sometimes required to be accomplished without docking for repairs or ammo!!! This may be "good training" for the corporate world, but it is NOT fun.

Sorry to keep you awake, SirCamps !!
Yes we are testing concepts. One of the major concepts in a GAME is none other
than ... (Drumroll please) ... you guessed it: FUN ! Better to find out sooner than later that we have a huge FUNLEAK here.

Eh, guys, quit complaining...nobody likes botting, but the game isn't finished. This has been said by FM many, many times, but people just don't seem to get it....

Uhhh, Mr. Cactus, may I call you Red?
Point 1. I am not complaining. I am pointing out something that I feel needs to be addressed. I talk to several people that play Vendetta, but never post and in some cases never even read the forums. The issue I brought up above is not just my opinion, but the opinion of all of us.

Point 2. I used to LOVE botting.....
Jun 25, 2004 harvestmouse link
I used to love botting when I was blatantly bad at it. I admit it's a little boring and repetitive now, but I wouldn't want it changed much at the moment, whether the change is to make it harder or easier.
<now, if it -did- come to number tweaking, leveling could be like this:
mission computer: "since you just killed 10 defenders in a row without docking in an ion bus, I will raise you from level 1/1/1/1 to level 4/4/4/4. if you can't afford that, you can settle for a lower level, like 2/2/2/2"
hehe that would be nice... truly experience/skill based>

Actually, I agree with the complainers on this one. No, the game is not finished, but we're getting pretty close to the stress test by now, and missions are boring to the point of being broken. They were built for a smaller universe, and need to be adjusted to work in one that's astronomically larger.

P.S. The "It's only a test" and "It's not finished" excuses from anyone but the devs hold little weight after being used so many times.

I guess this is a suggestions, so:

[moved to suggestions}

May I suggest that people try to be a little less ranty? It's hard to wade through all the rhetoric to get to the point, and some of it is a bit inflammatory. It would be much faster and easier to read if people were simply to post a brief statement of the problem and a quick solution, if any.

It would also be pleasant if subsequent posters offered suggestions or alternatives, rather than bashing ideas entirely. This is not a democracy, so people needn't vote against things they don't care for. If the devs like an idea they may use it, if not then they won't. If they think a vote is needed they will ask.

FM,

a: some how i think you ment to use this breaker ] and not this } :)

b: true, this is no democracy. never the less, if many players this badly on something than the devs, in my opinio, should think of a way to change this, either by taking the suggestions which are made, or making something of their one. but the concept of a democracy canot be held when the community is in some sort of agony, unless you want to become an unliked dictator.

now, i saw a mindor, but significant chage (for me) in the updating screen. instead of writing "vendetta test 3.4.*" it writes "vendetta BETA 3.5.*". now, a beta game is something very close to finished, it's a game i should be able to enjoy for a good while.

i am sorry that it's so judgemental, but this became so frustrating for me, seeing a game i liked becoming something that got the better of me.

and there were suggestions posted here, atlist i did.

Dynamism. That's what was going to set this apart from other MMORPGs, the fact that the missions, plot and story would play a major part in the day-to-day activities of the players instead of the exp grind in many of your more conventional MMORPGs.

The two main parts of that are now in place- a colossal new hub universe, and a fully-functioning mission/faction/exp system. I'm no programmer, but I know that each of these will have taken aeons to debug and fully implement. Content is not a big problem, we've all seen that with the vast amounts of ship/weapon variations brought in with 3.5, and the list of stuff available will keep increasing- the rate at which that happens won't be huge until the other "stuff" is designed and put in.

A mission/faction/exp system is essentially trigger-based- you do something which sets off X event which gives you Y bonus... I don't know if any of you think about this the way I do, but the fact that the devs have essentially almost completely balanced ships/weapons in one fell swoop bodes well for the invention of new missions.

I'm not making any sense *sigh*

No dave, you are not:)
Jun 27, 2004 Spellcast link
actually dave you are making perfect sense:

here's how it works guys. think of mission content as if it were a slideshow. The devs want to make sure the slide program works perfectly, that it changes pictures when it is supposed to, that it can start or stop the slide show correctly, that you can choose what slide you want to view.
To make sure this works, they filled it with images of 100 blank pieces of paper labeled "slide 1" "slide 2" "slide 3", very easy to make sure that it loaded the 45th slide when that slide is labeled "slide 45". We are currently looking at those pieces of paper, while the devs take all kinds of neat pictures for us that they can add later. :)
