I like Hoax's idea. The only problem is that it lacks symmetry. We need something else to measure so we can balance it out. It doesn't have to be anything special. A little guage to tell us how many hippos are in the sector or something would do fine.

A variation on Hoax's idea:

I can't ever get your site to load ... is it up is it just me? The dns resolves but your server never answers my web browser.

Try with http://homepage.mac.com/ctishman/distancemeter.jpg instead.

Cool, I see it now, thanks. Yeah, that looks nice and integrated, doesn't take up much too much space, could split it in 2 and have up to 8 new guages. Someone find 7 more things to measure. Oh wait 6 more, good idea about the hippos Magus. I think a distance to target guage would be pretty nice too. Icarus's suggested engine heat indicator could go on somewherez as well.

Rate of closure and angle of engagement would be two useful gauges. Both deal with dogfighting a target: AOE is the angle between your nose and your target's nose, ROC is pretty self-explanatory.
