Flight assist tweak...

Nov 01, 2004 cjx link
I'm sure it's been mentioned and I'm half assuming it was designed this way on purpose, but... backwards. What if flight assist had a range of thrust from -100% to 0% to 100% instead of 0% to 100%. Just change the color on that little meter from red when you are going backwards.

Just a thought.

Flight assist is aimed at users familur with other space games, X-wing etc.

I find that it is alright for the first month or so of play but afterwards flying with it off is much better.

It's easyier to get to grips with it if you can only fly forwards :)

Well, I much prefer it to flying with it off. As I'd prefer my ship to always maintain my forward (forward defined by my camerea view) velocity whether that be negative or positive. I find with assist off the meter on the left is ambiguous at best because unless I have a static object to judge by, I have no idea which direction I am traveling.

Maybe I'm missing a hud piece concerning navigation?

Turn on space junk up to medium or high, and don't think of it as actual space junk, but navigational aids.

That's what I use, and it works for me. It would be nice to have an actual velocity vector to show where the ship is heading.

adding reverse to flight assist is something we'll probably add sometime soon. sorry for the vague "soon", but.. I'm not sure exactly. more concerned about adding gameplay aspects as soon as possible.

To continue the suggestion (although I agree with addressing gameplay elements first): what if you hit the "stop" key (S) to slow down. Holding it down will continue to decrease velocity until you stop, and you'll stay stopped even if the key is still down. However, you let up on the key and press it AGAIN, and you'll start accelerating in reverse. I.E. the Stop key will stop you if you have a positive velocity and will reverse you if you have no velocity (at which point the accelerate key, W, would act as the stop key in reverse).

I just figured I'd throw that out, since I was thinking about it as I was contemplating how to add in reverse without removing the ability to come to a dead stop easily.

I'll stop babbling now :)

Well, there's also the brakes key (which is space bar). That can be used to stop and slow down while the backwards key can be used to go backwards.
