Targetting

Nov 07, 2004 JustinOhio link
One thing I don't really like, or maybe I just haven't figured it out yet, is that there seems to be no way of toggling through every target within 3000 in your sector, it seems like if I want to target something, it has to be on my front radar. I've tried the [ and ] keys and they don't seem to work???

Or how about targeting closest red or green regardless of weather or not they are behind or in front of you...

I've played a lot of space fighting games and it seems like this one is the worst when it comes to targetting, it seems like things should be easier...

Closest red is x by default, and i think the [] are not supposed to be in the game anymore just that nobody took them out. However it is much easier to just hit u and click on a players name to target them within 3000m.

While that is a fix, it would seem to be more prudent to have a key bind so that you can cycle thru all targets in your range. Having to do extra clicks during battle is bad. That might even be great for mouse wheel up and down.

Yes, the "select next target" commands do not properly choose the "next" target, but the devs are well aware of this.

I recommended just changing the behavior of [ and ]. If you have no target selected, hit [ and the nearest target (ship/cargo/etc depending on visibility) is selected. Hit it again and the next target farther away is selected. Hitting ] selects the next target nearer to your ship. And just base it all on the target distances at the moment the key is pressed. So if objects switch distance ordering, you just have to cycle back and forth to find them. At least this way, you can eventually see all the selectable objects in radar range.

At least now with the player list improvement (dimmed names are out of range or yourself), you can more easily select from the list.

I think too, when uses boost, they should show up on radar with a cirlce around it, (or something like that), no matter how far away from you they are. Just like in jumpgate. There should be some type of penalty for using it if you're trying to be stealthy.

There is a bind in the Custom Bind thread for a scanner:
http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/3229#57171

I use it every time I jump into a potentially hostile sector.

I am working on a bind that will skip through the object types for targetting. I'll let you know if it works and post it in the Custom Bind thread.
