EDIT*************************************************
The Hive\Levi battle has been postponed to Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 7PM GMT.
*****************************************************

There will be an Hive Leviathon Battle Wenesday, August 17, 2005, at 11pm GMT. Use Daylight Saving Time (where applicable) to translate the time.

This battle is for all nations. Its a chance for us to finally work together agaist a common enemy. Our goal is to beat back the hive not kill each other off. And please is you want to do PvP please go to Sedina B-8. we really don't need players attacking us while we are trying to fight the hive.

We need a Supreme Commander for this battle. Ghost was exellant during the last battle, but i would like to give others the chance to volunteer if they want too. Please list any ideas for stratagy below. It would be good if we can determine what worked or didn't work during our last battle.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, PLEASE DON'T KILL A LEVI PAST 6 PM GMT ON WENESDAY. THERE WON'T BE A BATTLE IF WE CAN'T FIND A LEVI. THANKS

So post any stratagy below or anything else. As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Ok... what we learned from the last battle.

3 groups of fighters at a minimum, with at least 3 in each squadron.

1 group of Bombers, 6-8.

Fighters, get in, pull the queens out, someone gives the signal to the bombers, they jump in for their run, and nuke all the turrets on ye olde levi.

Fighters should keep the Queens at about Jump distance until the levi is dispatched, and one squadron could be reassigned to pulling the other bots away from the levi.

What Worked: See above.

What Didn't work: People harassing the Hive Hunter group while they were gathering for the initial briefing.

What You need to know: Be online during the time of the Levi Battle, you will be told which sector to go to. Declare "Fighter/Bomber" as soon as you enter the sector. If there are already enough bombers, then you will be asked to be a fighter. If your comp has issues with graphics lag during a levi battle... Turn everything down all the way... even turn texture mapping to "pixel" even though it isn't as pretty. And point your view cone away from the Asteroid ring and the Levi.

What we MUST do: Have channels to monitor for orders. When the Supreme Commander calls for the ready signal, The squadron leader speaks for his squad, no one else, or it gets confusing.

Bomber Qualifications: Have the license levels to get the equipment you need... Rag MkIII or whatever you prefer... and Gems/Swarms (can someone clear this up? I was a fighter during the last battle)

Fighter Qualifications: Whatever, just be able to drag a queen out and keep it busy for a while, combat lvl 3/4 is nice to have just because you'll have equipment that can actually hurt the Queen and her escort. Can someone clarify what the splash radius is when a queen goes boom?

Is there anything I forgot?

Thats about it. Most of the stuff we did actually do last time. We had a channel where group leaders were in communication with eachother and relaying orders to their groups. We had 3 fighter groups of 3 each until Blackhole Goldclaw interrupted. It was organizing itself pretty well until the above person decided to interfere. All in all, I'd say what you listed above pretty much sums it up. See the first levi thread for the original battle plan in its entirety. Feel free to modify what you like although I believe the most essential parts are drawing off the queens and having separate groups of fighters and bombers. Other considerations might be to have a fighter group stay with the bombers just in case things get messy.

I sadly won't be able to attend. Have to work. But good luck to all who choose to participate!

I won't be able to attend either, but I do remember one thing we missed and came to bite us back during the last battle:

As Queens die, they respawn near the Leviathan again. These Queens took a heavy toll on the bomber squadron and actually stalled it for a while (at a rate of about four bomber deaths every minute) until the fighters returned and pulled them away again. Extra fighter squadrons are needed just for the express purpose of being able to return quickly to the Leviathan as soon as a Queen is killed to draw off the one that'll respawn in its place.

Also, the first waves of bombers should have homing missiles to deal with the turrets more effectively, and then switch to rockets for the monster itself. Also, keep an eye out for the respawning Queens and notify the fighter squadrons as soon as they're sighted.

the best solution is to avoid killing the queens, they're not the objective. just keep them busy.

for the rags, Stingrays do more total damage then swarms, the same goes for Yellowjackets over gems. the proxy usually goes off early and the entire cluster of swarms (or the other missile of the gems) don't do full damage.

the downside is the deployment is slower, but with good cover, it should be fune.

As a bomber pilot, I found using the roid walls to shake off pursuing bots to be effective. Make a run at the Leviathan then find a nice big roid to circle around to setup you next attack run.

So we need a commander. Beleve me i'm not qualified for the job.

I'm doing the battle on Wenesday because I hoped we could get more people to show up and get some people who can't come on weekends. But if we get less then 6 players i'm going to cancel this battle and reshedual for Sunday Then at least every thing won't be happening on saturday.

I think to combat being attacked while planning we plan in an emtty sector or in odia. And i think its important that each group try to use a diffent staion to home at. That way as things get going a prirate/griefer would only beable to attack some of us.

I'll be there. I can fill any role I'm needed in.

icbm1987: Unless the new queens are different, the queen's splash radius is about 600m.

Do we have a commander yet?

And thanks for the info Klox... now I know how far to stay away while firing teh killing shot.

does the Leviathan have a splash radious yet as well? I know that they (devs) did not put one in for the cap ships yet.

The Hive\Levi battle has been postponed to Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 7PM GMT.

We weren't able to find a Levi. One was killed about 5 to 6 hours before we started looking. So I guess the levi has a longer spawn rate then we know.

I will be around at that time if you guys can't find someone to coordinate it. Use me as a backup option though, cause if other people want to have a turn at it they're more than welcome.

I might be able to come along--if I do, I'll fly a Vulture in one of the fighter groups.

I had an idea, actually. What if, once the Queens were lured out (I mean waaaay out), all but one or two of the fighters jumped out of the system? The remaining fighters would be several thousand meters away from the Queens, and could report their behavior to the ones in the next system.

Odds are, if the Queens are lured out far enough, then they won't be able to return to the battle for several minutes, during which time the fighters can jump back into the system, putting them much closer to the battle, and assist with the other bots until the Queens start to get close to the Levi again, at which point they repeat the same tactic over and over until the Levi is destroyed.

It'll probably work from what I know of the AI, and if it doesn't, we won't lose anything.

I might be wrong on this, but I don't think the queens always attack the nearest target. Some of the queens seem to turn around and head back to the levi after the fighter they were chasing leaves. This can be solved however, by having the remaining fighters hit them a few times to get them to turn back around. All in all it's not a bad idea and might be worth trying. The one thing I cannot stress enough for this and the levi battle as a whole is that communication is key!

I guess Ghost will be our Commander again for this battle. I’m sure you will do a great job.

I was thinking the same thing as Nikana Olos. Could we lure the queens about 5 to 10 min out from the levi? Even if after the fighters jump out it would take at least that long for the queens to come back. Actually another question, are the queens even smart enough to find the levi without it being on their radar? Five to ten min out from the levi would be at least 10000m away and out side radar range.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, PLEASE DON'T KILL A LEVI PAST 12 PM GMT ON SUNDAY. THERE WON'T BE A BATTLE IF WE CAN'T FIND A LEVI. THANKS

And this time I will try and be on time :)

Yeah, I was thinking about the radar range thing too. If the observing fighters were out far enough that they could see the Queens without them being in sensor range, then would the Queens just hang out of the battle until something came within range? The Queens are certainly big enough that we could spot them (at least with zoom on).

Of course, they might spawn Observers and send them out, but at least we'd have some advance warning, and could get the fighters back out there to draw them off again.

In my opinion, the best fighters for the job would be Vultures with large batteries, because they have high turbo and low drain, not to mention two weapon slots. IBGs might work too, but I haven't tried one of those out yet.

Only a few hours until the hunt! I think I'll be there!

The queens do return to the levi even if it is out of their radar range.

The one thing I want to do differently for this battle is while having 3 fighter groups pull off the queens, I want a 4th fighter group that jumps in with the bombers to take care of any straggler bots that were left behind without queens. It will also be the responsibility of this escort group to destroy any bots repairing the leviathon.
Aug 21, 2005 Nikana Olos link
Those fighters will also be in a position to lure respawning Queens away if any die.

Sorry I wasn't there.

How'd it go?

Briefly, and i can only speak from a "bombing" pilot perspective, it sure wasn't easy.

The leviathan's turrets packed a serious punch, although I never even saw their beam, projectile or whatever it fires. Furthermore, those turrets could take several swarm hits and still remain relatively healthy.

It appears that the Observer-class bots are the healers in the crowd. When I wasn't targeting a levi's turret, I was trying to take out one of the healers.

The queens returned to the stronghold awefully fast after they had lost their quarry. That put a whole lot of assaults and guardians in the mix when the bombers were making their runs. The more that queens and the like can be drawn from the levi, the better.

That's all for now.
