Thoughts on Communications: Realism vs. Fun

Dec 12, 2006 moldyman link
Realiistically, communications at the moment in the VO universe would be system wide at most. Luckily, something better than radios would've come along, otherwise we'd be limited by the speed of light to how fast we talked, so at least system wide talk would be possible as a reasonable feature.

Fun-wise, one can say the wormholes have relay drones, whether one on each side and they open a micro wormhole every second or so (or keep one open indefinitely), or that a drone resides in the wormhole itself.

Thoughts?

Did you have a point or were you trying to explain why things are as they already are?

Forum posts have points?! I thought they were a way of stroking one's own ego by exercising their knowledge and obvious superiority by putting down others :O

I *want* system-wide chat (back).

As to how it works: Sub-Etha communicators.

I'd prefer if talk was limited to the system, except for a 'help' channel. Naturally, though, the egos among us could never allow themselves to be read by so little an audience, so they would soon take over the help channel. Then I could leave the help channel and never gain a mentor point without camping Dau. Sounds like a plan.

I'll bring up the quantum entanglement thing again for our instant communications.

How's this: we separate a pair of particles, both with the opposite spin (one is spin-up, one is spin-down). Using some kind of futuristic device, we are able to read and write the status of these particles' spin. Since the other particle will immediately change its spin when its twin is switched, we have the basis for a unlimited-distance high-tech telegraph which communicates far faster than the speed of light.

All stations have these as well, and messages are relayed across the universe in picoseconds.

How's that for explanation?

Or, I'll also go for sub-etha.

I always thought there were little magic gnomes in our comm units with telepathic powers...

Anywho, I also always thought it would be neat if the stations themselves served as relay points. That way Itani transmissions were relayed by Itani stations, Serco by Serco stations and UIT by, well you get the point. Also, since UIT is pretty neutral they would relay Itani and Serco transmissions, but if an Itani was in Serco space, tough luck, they will have no one to talk to out side of System or Sector chat. Oh, and maybe there could be an addon for relaying transmissions, large I guess. Could Have a Serco invasion with a series of rags from Deneb to Itan relaying, until one is found, then back in the dark. Sounds like fun to me!

'telepathic powers'

And how do these work, huh? HUH?

Anyway. System-wide chat excluding chat on #100 would be bad. I don't like it.

Anyway. System-wide chat excluding chat on #100 would be bad. I don't like it. The point of #100 is not, unlike Aramarth thinks, solely to inflate our collective egos, but also to RP and stuff, if you kill it, you kill the game (it's been tried, didn't work, try again).

Seriously, what the fuck the inital post here is getting at (assuming it's getting at anything) is utterly unclear.

But assuming there's a suggestion for a System Chat, it's a great idea. Not in replacement for 100 or other VO wide channels, but as an alternative; it would mainly be used for RP events or hardcore RP players who never use global chats.

What key would it be bound to as the default? What a problem!

Heck I'd be happy to just close 100, but then people would assume I still read it and get pissed if I ignored them. Murphy's Law.

Mystic gives Doc something to eat, here have this fresh young itani, hunger makes you cranky. :P

*Where did I get the itani to give to Doc? What do you think happens to the hapless young pilots that tick pirates off? Feed em to Lecter, no muss, no fuss. :)

And on the topic, realistically speaking I believe this far into the future we will have these channels of communication, look at all the sci fi movies, are we any less advanced than the peeps in the Star Trek stuffs? There are relays around to help the distance of course, but its not unrealistic that we have far reaching communications. Gamewise, this is what we were discussing once before as to killing an itani convoy in Dau, and the itani government hearing about it. I figure this is known from a communication that is made by the escorts or the voys themselves to their home base. This spans several systems so why couldnt regular communications do the same. Just my thoughts.

I think it's been said before but guild chat and group chat should be like 100 in that they work any place for any one. Outside of that I think system wide chat is a good idea.

I never did like 100.

My point was to find out the different RP explanations for instantaneous communications across many light years. Learn by asking. *goes to look up subetha*

I like the possibilities Waffles' idea gives but of course we're nowhere near minimum size for it to be anything but a nuisance...

Haha. Oh, yes! Silly me, I forgot that [TGFT] had pioneered this system about 4,000 posts ago...
