A random pattern

"...26,27,28,29,30. All test cases done with complete success," technician said. "No remaining damage to neural interface, altogether."

Mike-L stood up and smiled slightly. It was a year of feeling of complete loss, since his body apparently rejected the nanite infusion. Or it seemed like that at the first glance...
He grabbed his bag from the floor, heading to the station dock.
"As the time goes, less metal, more nanotech..." - such was the most often repeated sentence in Serco tech bays. Innovations become a routine nowadays, as new batches of brand new nanobots were given to ordinary soldiers like him.
And it came to that he was some kind of failure.
"nanosystem acting randomly"...
"minimal damage to most tissues"...
"reconvalescence needed"...
Not many people outside the Dominion know what feels a warrior who is not able to pilot a ship anymore for some reason. Such person is somewhat at the edge of whole society, unneeded, replaceable...
Final diagnosis forced him to heal his wounds for whole six months, only looking at young brave pilots being sent outside the borders to find fights they all sought so bad.

Suddenly, on the day Mike-L thought it will never come, a female Serco nanotechnologist, found his temporary address in military database and contacted him about the possibility of 'treatment.' Minimal, only half-automated nanite injections would restore him to the previous state. She said once: "After that, a part of your brain will be a handiwork of mine. Never forget that." Mike-L did not have even a slightest idea why she was speaking that way, but he did not really care at that time. He wanted only to fly his ol' agresso again.

Despite the tediousness of the process, another half of a year went quickly like a breeze. She was very caring and self-aware, reminding him of feelings lost to time long ago...

Some loud, grinding sound woke up from his daydream at the dock. He jumped into his ship and activated primary connector.
"INTERFACE CHECK RESULT: ALL OK."
"SYNC DONE, AUTH DONE. STARTING SYSTEMS."
Mike-L yelled with sheer happiness and headed for Odia...
