Come one, come all to the fourth Ultimate Wingman Tournament!
Choose your wingman.
Develop your strategies.
Fight for victory.
If you complete the journey, you will be crowned the Ultimate Wingmen.

This tournament represents the first team competition within the game that guarantees a level playing field. Don't be the one to miss out!

The Fourth Ultimate Wingman Tournament will be held November 8th at 2000 GMT (that is 1600 US Eastern). Signup cutoff is a half hour prior. To sign up, see Veracity ingame or post in this thread including the in-game names of you and your wingman. The winning team will receive unique tournament trophies and 30 million credits to split, courtesy of Mor Isil and Big Red One!

.

Rules are as follows:
1. You must enter with a wingman. You may not change wingmen. Your wingman must be a member of your guild or nation; if not, one of you must be native KOS.
Note: Native KOS players are at a natural disadvantage, because they and their wingman are able to shoot one another.
2. There are no weapon restrictions. Only four ship chassis are allowed. You may participate in any non faction-specific Centurion, Vulture, Warthog, or Atlas. This means your ship will probably be a mkIII or mkIV.
3. The tournament ladder will be a simple double elimination format.
4. Similar to the nation war, leaving the sector is not permitted, and running for obscene distances will result in disqualification. Interpreting this distance is up to the discretion of your fight's moderator. Chances are, if you turn your back to the enemy, you are wrong.
In previous tournaments, many people did turn their backs- but only to switch targets to their second enemy. This is acceptable. Fleeing to avoid getting shot is not. Learn to dodge newb.
5. Lagging out renders you victim to whatever happens to your ship. Matches will only be replayed in the event of a server/system/sector crash. Participants may be disqualified for acute lag (i.e. I could not have played with my Iraq lag).

Thank you for your registration. You are the first confirmed team. Even I don't have one yet..

You can be my wingman anytime, 'marth!

(Let's see if he gets the response right this time...)

No, you can be mine. ;)

Aramarth: I don't suppose I could get you to consider thinking about changing the ship restrictions so that they aren't biased in favor of vultjocks...

Make a proposal and I will consider it. Past changed rules include rule 1, for instance, when Mick convinced me that being of the same guild was as valid or more valid than being of the same faction. I am willing to consider any proposal that is constructive and persuasive. If you don't wish to post it here, get in touch with me on IRC or in-game and I'll give you my email.

In all honesty, though, I think I am moving toward a system that puts everyone in the same ship. I'm trying to reward skill here (specifically teamwork), not gear selection. Nonetheless, I'm interested in what you have to say.

some pilots that are dangerous in a rev c are much less so in a cv and vice versa. i don't think either one enjoys any absolute advantage over the other and both are easily available. somehow some people's strengths and weaknesses are better accommodated by one ship rather than the other.

there may be a 'best' setup for your tournament but hopefully the devs have balanced serco/itani type light fighters so that there isn't any grotesque unfairness. if there is then we need to let them know....

so, yeah -- allow the corvus vultarius and the orian centurion rev c.

the effort required to get the necessary faction is minimal compared to the time one must spend to learn how to fly well.

I am unwilling to allow the CV on the grounds that it has an advantage in top speed (75m/s). Against any other vessel in the game, this extra speed allows a CV pilot the ability to choose his distance while his opponent's counters are limited. I've flown enough to know exactly how much of a difference this can make, especially when the CV pilot chooses to fly backwards. I dont see any reason to open pandoras box for the corvus vult. It is simply without parallel in the game.

A RevC is similar, it has a top end of 70m/s. I cannot allow the cent if I do not have a vulture with 70m/s to balance it, and I cannot allow a CV without a cent with 75m/s. The only common denominator between these two craft is 65m/s, which I can achieve by way of limiting everyone to Mk# versions.

Don't get me wrong, I am a far better pilot in a centurion than in a vulture. I know where you're coming from. But I just don't have the tools available to me to prevent what I see as a 'backroll threat' that the rev and corvult possess. I have gone through hell against some corvult pilots just trying to keep them in range, and I am not willing to let the tournament devolve in the same fashion. Even though a backroller is unlikely to possess the skills required to win, the fun of the contest would be gone.

Now, I can write up a new version of the centurion or vulture and Incarnate could approve it overnight- it has happened before- but until such time as I have an option with proper balance, we're a bit stuck.

The UWT is this coming weekend, and I have only one team registered. If I don't have at least four teams, I'll have to cancel until next time...

maybe if you offered a second place prize...
Oct 22, 2008 Aramarth link
That is a good idea.

Second place team will receive ten million to split.

Keria Willennium and I will compete in the tournament for the greater glory of the Big Red One and the Serco Dominion.

That's three teams. Any more?

Thanks to ABC, (yes, the network) the UWT will not be held this Saturday. Everyone say "THANK YOU ABC!!"

They have seen fit to schedule my team's game in such a way to overlap the UWT time slot entirely. Whatever you may think of me or college football, know that I will not miss the really important things for a video game.

I am now accepting suggestions for a new date for the 4th tourney- I want as many people voting as possible please, so that I can get a good turnout.

How about 2 hours after NW on Sunday? or maybe before it? lots of people on at that time.
Oct 24, 2008 Surbius link
I can do that time.
Oct 24, 2008 FatStrat85 link
That would be bad for me. Just push it back a week.

Sunday is generally not a good day for me to be on vo. As aramarth said important things come first over a video game.
