Deneb Run: Corvus Greyhound Testing

123»
Mar 27, 2009 MSKanaka link
Time: 20:00 GMT (4PM Eastern, 3PM Central/Forum Time, 1PM Pacific) Saturday March 28th
Location: Odia M-14.

The Makchuga will be hosting a special Deneb Run this weekend for the purpose of determining how the Greyhound will affect the playing field. To that end, some of the rules for this weekend are slightly different. First, here are the unchanged rules:

1) Racers must race from Odia M14 through Deneb heading clockwise back to Odia M14.
2) Race starts in Odia M14 near the station.
3) Contestants must be within 100m of the MC(s) before the start.
4) No shooting before the race starts.
- Depending on the severity of the infraction, and at the host's (or hosts') discretion, violation of this rule can result in not only a disqualification for the current race, but also a ban from winning prize money as either a racer or an anti-racer in future Deneb Runs. (new rule extension)
5) You die and you're out (so no /exploding)
6) Attempting to trigger a false start of the race is grounds for disqualification.

Now, the modified/new rules:

1) We will be accepting as many racers this weekend as possible, dependent on the number of MCs present, and fully encourage anyone to participate. (In short, the maximum number of racers that will be accepted is seven times the number of MCs.)
2) All weapons and ships (except the Valkyrie) are allowed, and racers are particularly encouraged to use a Corvus Greyhound if they can purchase one. The more people using Greyhounds, the better, but it would be ideal if there are a couple people using "normal" ships (Orion Hornets, Hog2s, EC-107s, Vult3s, etc.) for a comparison during a single race.
3) No actual prizes will be awarded for this race. However, all racers who finish will be paid for their participation. The amount has yet to be determined, but it will be at least twice the cost of a Greyhound and Fast Charge powercell.
4) Any racer that loses their ship will be reimbursed for either 100k or the value of their ship, whichever is the lower amount.
5) On that note, I would like to request that the usual anti-racer crew please refrain from attacking racers this week; during the next Deneb Run you can go back to your usual antics, but this week I would like to test just the race time and not the ability of the Greyhound to flee from pirates. Instead, if you would like to race, that would be much appreciated. Again, you will not be paid if you kill racers this week. Please participate as a racer instead so that I can get a better data set.

A summary for the "tl;dr" folks:
- Pirates are encouraged to race and not chase.
- There will not be 1st/2nd/3rd place prizes. Instead:
-- anyone who finishes will get a bit of money, and
-- racers who lose ships will be reimbursed the value of their ship up to 100k.
- Use of the Greyhound is actively encouraged.
- Any racer will be accepted as long as there is room and they do so within the registration period.

As usual, spots in the race group(s) are first-come, first-served, and priority will be given to those who sign up on this thread. Here is the expected order of events for tomorrow:

2110 GMT, Friday: Forum registration for the Greyhound Test Run opens.
1800 GMT: The absolute earliest that ingame registration opens.
1900 GMT: The absolute latest that ingame registration will open. Forum registration will close at this time.
1945 GMT: Ingame registration closes. No more racers will be accepted.
1950 GMT: Racers are expected to be in Odia M-14 in their race groups with the MCs out at the jump point.
2000 GMT: The race begins.*

Any further changes to the rules or schedule will be posted here. I or one of the other MCs will also post here when forum registration closes. We look forward to seeing you this week!

* If the race starts without you, tough luck -- the timer starts with the departure of the race group(s) from Odia M-14, and is not specific from person to person. If you are late to start, your finish time will reflect that. Do not ask me or any other Deneb Run MCs to delay the start. The Nation War MCs may spoil you in this regard, but the Deneb Run MCs will not.

I'll be in a Greyhound killing racers, unless I'm working or out drinking.

And yes, I know there's no money for it this week. I just have some testing of my own to do, and ya'll will make fine guinea pigs.

Assuming we have the minimum of three racers by the time the Run starts in just under an hour, consider forum preregistration closed.

If we can't get enough racers (or wormhole sectors are broken, though it doesn't sound like this is the case at the moment), we will postpone to sometime later next week (possibly next Saturday, maybe earlier if I can fit it into my schedule) and forum preregistration will re-open.

If you want to race, log in!

The test run went well today. The finishing times:
- Breazle, with 27:15
- Ishathis Bessuni, with 31:15
- Hentai_Jeff, with 34:29
- Gerty, with 38:28

Judging by these times (one really fast time by a veteran, and three "normal" times), I would like to host another round or two of testing, with more racers. To that end, I will open up pre-registration for the next round, tentatively scheduled for the same time (20:00 GMT) next Saturday. Please post here if you intend to race next week.

The fastest time is 26:36, by Erik C. in an EC-107, recorded in Deneb Run #61.

Very intersting that the Greyhound wasn't able to smash that time. icanhaz500Nturbothrust?

Get Mick or Erik to run it in a Hound.

I don't think anybody scouted the entire route. Breazle may well have beat the record if he hadn't hit a couple storms.

I think Breazle did scoot but the run will always be slightly random. even if you check for storms 10 mins before it doesn't mean there won't be storms when you come through.

If someone pays for someone to scout ahead it might help. Or ask a dev to temporarily get rid of all storms on the route (as a test of course).

i semi scouted and Erik noes alot of shortcuts ie jump here then to the wh and you get to the wh closer. I no one... if i new all of the shortcuts erik does i think i would have got it, since it was only summin like a 30second failure. I also had to dodge 8 storms, though i imagine when erik got the record he did to, although probably doing a shortcut at the same time. So this is why the greyhound didnt beat any records i guess

[EDIT] I hit no storms at all. Its just a total failure if u do :P

/me fails :)
Mar 29, 2009 moldyman link
I *knew* shortcuts and such. It's been a very long time.

I dodged all storms (if I remember right), because I had the right mix of shortcuts and no storms on the straight route that race.

Anyway, see if Mick could beat it. I never did well in non infiniboost ships anyway.

well ye *knew*

Hi btw.. what was the turbo max speed of the 107 back then?
Mar 29, 2009 Sraer link
Hehe, good try Gerty, it was a very convenient procurement mission having a race to watch at the same time!
Mar 29, 2009 maq link
I'll try to race next week.

107's speed didn't change Brea. (It's only my poor vult that got nerfed :( )
