Temporary Buffs

Temporary buffs would be very cool.

They could be dropped by bots in areas that would foster more group battles, or in situations where certain kill conditions are present. They could also be trade-able, fostering a nice black market.

-25% Energy Weapons Damage boost for 1 hour
-10% Turbo Thrust Boost for 1 hour
-50% XP gains for 1 hour

etc etc...

It's a game not a flight simulator.

The basic idea is cool and reminds me a lot of other flight games I used to enjoy in my young days. However the acquiring of this should be really, really hard, not only for newbies but also for vets. And I have bad feelings about the damage reducers on PvP . Maybe make it so all those kind of boosts are nullified for the time of recorded duels? Otherwise it's quite cool. Especially the XP boost would probably make newbies a little more attending.

those were hyphens, not minus signs... but a negative buff isn't a bad idea either. Lots of possibilities!

I would much rather see them add persistent modifier addons that could be equipped into utility or systems ports. Increased engine thrust, increased armor, increased auto-aim, increased <stat>.

Not all modifiers of any sort, temporary or permanent, should necessarily be positive only. An increase in armor should logically come with an increase in mass. An increase in auto-aim could impose a small energy drain.

something like that wouldn't realistically be something you'd get from a drop though. That sounds more like a "shady mechanic" feature where you buy your ship and by some means (either base dependent or random or whatever) a mission can be taken to tweak your ship in some way ...which would have some drawback as well. The "system" or utility port would be given one of a variety of modifier objects invisible to the player (and it wont drop). Allowing the ship to become modified by whatever option was chosen in the mission and have it persist until the ship is boomed.

Such things as drops though would sound too much like magic. Since they modify things that just wouldn't make sense being changeable by an addon.

No to magic.

Yes to something like draugath suggests.
