I had this idea because I have seen some people who did not care about other faction standing and even their own nation standing. They just want to pirate people, even on the nation space.
Below here are some ideas I had in mind.
1. Make it so only people with at least "Hated" standing or worse can join the "grey".
2. Make it so only "grey" people to be able to manufacture the Widowmaker along with the Superlight.
3. To prevent people from purposely lowering their standing just for the sole purpose to join "grey" and then simply fix their standing again, make it so "greys" can only reach +600 with all the 3 major faction, thus restricting their access to the Valkyrie, UDV and Prometheus. That will certainly make them re-think their decision.
4. (Might scrap this one.) Like the faction standing recovery mission, make it so they can only enter and exit grey just once, once they stopped being grey, they can't be grey anymore.
5. On Corvus stations, "greys" won't be chased by the strike force even when their KoS.
6. ~Inserts your idea here~

@Luxen I'm new to the forum ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
+1 anyway even tho it'll never happen
I have said it before and I will say it again here... being "grey" has nothing to do with standing. I should NOT need KoS/Hated with any given faction to associate myself with grey.
Otherwise, +1

"unaligned"
Im Grey and your rules would forbid me to be grey. so screw you:

You guys are making this way to complicated.
Grey/Unaligned:
1) Can not go past +200 with any of the three major factions (brick wall limit, new players will be -200 to start)
2) Add a new player training sector to Odia, navigate to capitol goes to M-14 after completing training sector Admire with Corvus
3) Nation changes require selling of all major faction ships (proms, svg, ibg, valk, udv, wtd) and getting standing to +200 or less with 3 major factions.
That is all it really needs to be.

+1 grey and +1 dread's idea, but dread, but we all know that the sol ll, dau, itan, has training sectors in them and their own nation type with that nation in that system can't get hurt there, so why don't when we give a grey option to become grey that can only let them become grey when the play as a: serco, itani or uit, and got at least to combat before that option is given and take away the training because if ya grey you know perfecly well what grey is about, unless i got that whole new nation thing wrong then disregard my idea beside the training(?)
No safety in Grey. The upside to doing a grey character is almost instant access to Corvus deals. Downside is no carebear safety net.
Grey character starts in Grey space hence adding a training sector to Odia.

-1 to original OP's specifics. +1 to DPR's.
Dpr's idea sounds nice, but only if the grey option requires you first pass combat 4 on another alt. Or 3, if you care about f2pers complaining.
No Luxen. Stop trying to put requirements on it. Let it be its own "Nation". The specs I laid out are plenty limiting.
Unaligned should mean no nation.
The specs I have laid out are no nation. You would have your name in grey text and the limits I outlined for faction standings.
Again with the (IMO) ridiculous standing requirements? Why would the Serco nation allow an Itani, their hated enemies, a 600 standing, or vice-versa, but a grey pilot is capped at 200? Capping nation standings at 600 I could agree with, but grey != criminal/outlaw/prate. Stop trying to shoehorn poor standing on those with a taste for freedom!
As for a grey starting option, well, that's a whole different bucket of fish.

Could we have a free discussion of possibilities without feeling the need to defend just one viewpoint? VO does not work on a democratic vote, but on the merits of good ideas.
@Faille
You want to be free from aligence to any nation but still want access to nation ships? Yeah that seems to be a bit much. Either you want to be free/unaligned or you don't. If your Grey ships are not good enough maybe reconsider your desire to be Grey. No where in my specs does it say anything about grey being criminals or pirates. They do put a balance in place in exchange for characters starting in grey with corvus admire. Remember you have to take new players into account nit just vets who have been playing awhile. Living in the unmanaged wilds is supposed to be tough, again if not being able to go above +200 with the 3 major nations none of which you want to be a part is to tough maybe you are not cut out to be Grey.

Remove all nations. Problem solved.
All pilots start colourless and can pick a faction/subfaction to join when they his combat 3?
