Pinpointing Ore Locations

It would be very useful to have some means of pinpointing ore locations within sectors.

Although it seems that any means of either displaying 3-D coordinates on the HUD or storing them in the errors.log file using the now-defunct "/displayshippos" command is out of the question due to the risk of the data being hacked for use by automated bots (see the related thread "Finer Grids / Coordinate System" ( http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/9587#110119 )), IMHO, there should still be some convenient means of pinpointing ore locations.

I am tired of spending dozens of minutes repeatedly hunting for that difficult-to-find asteroid containing Pentric or Heliocene ore in a huge asteroid field.

One idea would be to provide 3-D coordinates only for asteroids, but not for anything else. That way, ships would not be able to determine their own coordinates, making hacking very difficult, but mining more convenient. Players would need to determine an asteroid's coordinates relative to other asteroids, but not relative to their own ship's coordinates.

Another idea would be somehow to represent the coordinates using means easily decodable by players, but not by any automated script. Personally, I would encode them by using some kind of SONAR device that would ping sounds with higher frequency as the ship approached a specific target whose coordinates were entered using, say, a new "/sonar <XX-YY-ZZ" command, but not show anything visible on-screen or in any file. Any automated script would need somehow to record the sound after keying in a target set of coordinates and decode the resulting aural ping, which would be quite difficult by comparison.

I am very interested in compiling a database of the precise locations of various kinds of precious ore. This would be useful information apparently not compiled currently by any guild.

I am personally a fan of the beacon idea. These would be sorta like mines, only they would persist when you left the sector, would do no damage, and would be visible at extreme range. Add in a facility for players to name them and make them visibility controllable (ie: a choice to be either personal, group-only, guild-only, team-only or world visible). Da.

mmm....beacons are nice, but call me crazy for actually ENJOYING writing down directions to rich asteroids..

-okay, leave the station;

-fly to *this antenna* on the top/bottom;

-point to *this* neon-sign, or *that* nebula-pattern;

-count *however-many* rocks *left* ........ (etc)

Although I agree that it takes a good amount of work, especially if you need to wait for it to cool after someone else got to it first...

Rogues idea of the beacons being able to be viewed by specifics is a great idea. Not a new one but that is a new twist to it IIRC

If deku would stop ignoring me, he'd learn something.
Bread crumb/memory method: Load up on cheap ores, find the roid, and dump ores leading back to the station if its a station sector. I have memorized 4 roids for one sector, giving me about 300 crates of helio every 6-8 hrs, which in turn results in about 10M credits a week. I know one by sitting above a dock and looking at a certain antenna. The other three are relational to that point. (10 degrees right, 30 degrees left, and about 170 degrees "down")

You don't have to be alone. Behemoths require another friend with a scanner to locate ores. This scanner ship can also stay put at the roid, to wait for fellow miners (Group Mining anyone? It exist's you know...) Besides, group mining is more efficient. It especially helps when you have friends, or a guild you active in.
