Seen the new "Rules of Conduct" yet?

Jul 25, 2005 JestatisBess link
See the Rules of Conduct here:
https://www.vendetta-online.com/h/conduct.html

You might need to refresh your bowser or clear out your cache to see it in the menu on the left.

I think it destroyes pirating. I'm not a pirate and I ralely get pirated but i think its an esential part of the game that should stay. Like most of you, I was very bored when Blak left us for a couple of months. I was happy when they came back and i looked forwarded to be pirated again. at least my trade missions could be a little interesting again.

And the game is called "VENDETTA" online. Maybe it should be called "Happy friendly people holding hands"?

Does this also mean that Grey space is safe? If so whats the point of the game? just killing bots? It seems you only allow for mutual PvP action and nothing else.

What do you think of it?

Disclaimer: In Section 1.2 paragraph 2 it says I have the right to disagree with Guild software policies and question them?

EDIT: I hope this post doesn't cause "general unrest within the game" or I would be violating that rule now :(

I'm not sure if i want to play a game where anything i do could get me banned and i have to make a disclaimer to my post :(

I agree with you that the carebear attitude will not mix well with the whole "vendetta" attitude.

I understand your concern, but I think you guys are taking this way too seriously. The devs know what they are doing. They know the difference between role playing and personal abuse. Saying "Die, Serco dog!" or "Avast! drop yer cargo ye scurvy trader!" isn't going to get you banned. It's mostly just common sense, really.

Every MMO needs a code of conduct and this one is pretty standard. Try reading the code of conduct for WoW, for example.

I don't want to point fingers but don't they sound like they may have been for the most part copied from another on-line type game. Vendetta, not being like other games, will require some special rules. I'm sure the devs will get around to balancing the rules before they are fully enforced.

A calm, reasonable discussion is the best response.

Also it it nice to know that you do read everything that is on the site.

Pirating is a valid game-play action. The Rules of Conduct needs a bit of editing.

[16:15:18] <Incarnate> I have no intention of outlawing pirates.

Straight from IRC. The Rules of Conduct simply need a little bit of tweaking as of the moment, so don't go attacking the devs just yet. They're just in place as a legal fail-safe.

No, it is not my intention to ban piracy in any way. This game will not become a carebear game. But feel free to state your concerns and we may modify the rules to make them clearer in those respects.

This was posted because we had a problem crop up that demonstrated a need to further clarify our legal ability to mute/ban people if we needed to (someone threatened legal action). It's not like we *want* to, but this is something that was going to crop up eventually (some people are nasty, oh well), so the rules of conduct came about.

The worst part of the legal system in the united states is that it often amounts to "whomever has the most money can sue anyone and tie things up in court forever". I tried to put us on the strongest legal footing I could. This does not denote any change in our policies or how we enforce them (or how we have for years), as far as I'm concerned, it simply clarifies and makes certain that our game-management abilities (and enforcement thereof) are stated and understood.

People seem most concerned about #2 on the "Play nice policies", namely:

2. You may not harass others.

Harassment is defined as specifically targeting another player or group of players to harm or inconvenience them. As harassment can take many forms, the Guide involved will make a determination as to whether or not a "reasonable person" would feel harassed and act accordingly.

***

That should be taken to mean harassment that is above and beyond normal gameplay. That does not mean piracy (yes, some people may consider being pirated harassment, but WE DO NOT). This is more along the lines of sexual harassment or overt abuse of players within the game.. something we have ALWAYS made an effort to keep to a minimum. The fact that it leaves it up to the Guides to determine what "harassment" is is a necessity of the fact that people can be creatively nasty in so many different ways (especially with the game evolving as it does). The Guides are pretty solid people, and all veteran players. They aren't going to penalize you for pirating someone.

Nothing is changed by this posting of rules. The only real effect is that it protects us (Guild) from enforcing our actions on the rare occasions when we need to.

Like others, I was concerned about the new rules. I wasn't bashing the developers but I think my concern is justified. The way the rules are written now I could be accused of causing "general unrest within the game".

I liked the fact that as long as we were "nice" to each other and acted with no malice toward anyone we could basically do what we wanted.

I think i should cancel my battle with Joyce see:
http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/7/10911

I guess that would be considered a violation too.

EDIT: I just read incarnate's post. Ok I understand now. I'm still concerned that these rules might be abused, especially if a guide doesn't like someone. (I'm not accusing any guide here)But maybe a group, involving more then one developer and guides, should be in charge of permantly banning somone. just a thought.
Jul 25, 2005 genka link
Yes, definitely. And you should stop harassing all those asteroids with your damn mining beams too. Might get banned or sommat.

JB, I don't like the way they read I think, no better then you, BUT, I dont' think you are causing any kind of general unrest within the game or violating any of the new rules by making that post, if anything it was a funny RP thing that you did and if anything I would like to see more of those. Just my opinion though.

Unfortunately, "Nice" is too vague to have much legal value, so this is an attempt to quantify "Not Nice". Only an attempt, and one that can see further revision.

I came up with the original idea of "Be Nice" because I hate long stupid lists of rules like this, and haggling over interpretation. Every four-year-old knows what it is to be Nice, why do the rest of us have so much trouble with the concept? (Rhetorical question about humanity, and not related to our userbase, who almost always did fine with just Being Nice).

Anyway, enforcement of game policies has always been up to us, and if you've agreed with them to date, I don't think you have much to worry about the future. It's unfortunate that these sorts of "clarifications" are necessary in the business world today.

Anyway, continue posting suggestions here:

And I'll probably update the Rules later this week sometime. Locking this thread due to redundancy of topic..
