You should have to have Mining 10 to pilot a capship.

Hehe.

This is all poppy cock. Many MANY players are going to get screwed due to:

Lack of being in a guild
Lack of insane levels
Lack of insane cash
Lack of being an alpha/beta/friend_of_the_devs
etc

They are not just gonna give it to everything. And I'm betting the ship is just the trident a1k0n was flying around a long time ago.

It doesn't look anything like the trident:

actually it does look a bit like the trident.

change the rear nacelles on the trident to a vertically stacked engine set on each side and roll (the viewpoint) for it to about a 45 degree angle. it definitely has a different texture tho.

the trident has a bulge under the nose that could be the 'cockpit' everyone is seeing in the "new" ship.

does anyone happen to have a screenie of the trident from underneath and to the side?

Spell, you just said (paraphrase): "Sure it looks just like the trident if you change it completely."

not really tumble. A texture change isn't huge, and it certaintly COULD be from the same base model just a different variant on the rear "wing"

lol tumble, you are right though. Nothing like the trident at all.

It's not the same ship as the trident (edit: it's not from the same base model either). It fits somewhere in between the trident and hac in size.

It is certainly not going to be an alpha/beta-players-only ship! As one would expect in reality, though, it will be harder to aquire than smaller ships. Beyond this, I'm not sure what John has in mind.

It will require the same new interfaces as other player-owned capships, so don't expect it until after we roll out the new interface system. (Soon)

hac = Heavy Assault Cruiser. the cap ships that wander into B-8 from time to time.

Does anyone believe that this is going to go straight to the production server? I would put them initially on the test server, and make them cheap so everyone could try them out and test them without worrying about money and stuff.

Also, I had doubts that this was a "capship" until momerath said it was bigger than a trident. Actually, I still have doubts this is a true capship.

Having it cost MAD CREDITS and require MAD LEVELS is perfectly reasonable. it's the only balance you could really apply to a capital ship without nerfing_it_to_hell/making_it_pointless. A high level requirement (12?) would insure that not ANYBODY can get it without effort, and a high cost in the range of 5... 10 Million credits would insure that those that can, don't use it all the time and make the game less fun for everyone else.

I dunno. I think if I had to put in loads of effort (LEVEL 12??? That's...practically nobody!) to be able to make it to the point of being able to get a Cappy, I'd just go and play Homeworld 2. I mean, people have been wanting these capital ships for...years? And then go and make it even harder to get is silly. That's like thumbing your nose at somebody saying "it's available but you can't have it!"

So Cunjo, really, making cappys hard to get would make the game less fun, especially with people whining about it.

Why make cap ships lvl 12? For you guys that wasted your time lvling up when it wasn't necessary? And following your logic, a ship is balanced just because very few people can get it.
Sep 11, 2005 A-Dawg link
Another way to balance cap ships would be to only have them available to a) guilds or b) for special missions and/or huge amounts of xp and money, or a mix of both. This would insure people wouldn't jump into B8 looking for a fight, eventually kill themselves and then absent mindedly click the "Buy Back Last Ship?" button for another round. Or have them restricted to only certain areas. That fits more along with the mission idea, "Destroy Leviathan and minions" mission or something.
