Where I Have Been.

Hi everyone. I was hoping for a release on Friday, and planned to at least make a newpost about what we're working on and why.

I was riding my bike to the office on Friday evening to potentially do a release with Ray. My girlfriend was also riding her bike with me, planning to do some errands near our office and ride home on her own. From my house to the office is a pleasant 10-mile ride (mostly trails and parkway), so I often ride to work when the weather is nice. We were coming downhill off of a tall railroad overpass with an intersection at the bottom, and had separated a little from climbing the big hill. We were on the sidewalk, coming down the hill against traffic, which always requires a bit more care with cross-traffic (since they're looking the other way). I crossed through the intersection at the bottom, with the light, making sure the Semi-truck driver waiting for the light on the cross-street saw me. I was about 60 feet past the intersection when I heard a scream, and turned around to see my girlfriend fall under the 18-wheeler semi rig as the light changed, and watched it roll over her as I ran back towards her.

Miraculously, she is relatively ok. She was going too fast and couldn't stop at the unexpected sudden light change, hitting the truck and falling underneath. Most of the truck and trailer drove over her legs, the axle/diff doing some injury to her upper body as she was rolled and tumbled over. She ended up with both ankles broken, her collarbone fractured in two places, and a slightly chipped tooth (complete with axle grease).. which is, and I'm not a religious person, pretty frigging Miraculous with a capital M. The policeman who headed the accident investigation said he had seen a number of people go under semi rigs, but none had ever come out alive. The trailer was, thankfully, loaded with empty beer cans and headed for a cannery (yay Milwaukee!). A full 60,000lb load on that truck, or even the slightest alteration in her trajectory under the truck/trailer, and the outcome would probably have been much, much, MUCH worse. The truck driver, who really did nothing wrong, was completely unaware that anything had happened, and was nearly sick on the spot when police caught up to him and told him about the accident.

I usually don't post publicly about personal stuff like this, at least not in this kind of detail; but my life is going to be changing around a bit for the next 6-8 weeks.. I wanted to give you all some idea of what was going on, and frankly I don't really care who knows what at this point.. it's easier for me to just say what happened. This alters nothing about my plans for Guild and for the game, including our intentions for increased marketing over the coming weeks, and rollout of some major changes to the game and universe (economy, faction system, etc). But I'll also be taking care of her, practically all the time, until she's able to walk again. With the breaks affecting both her arms and legs, she's pretty immobile until she heals. Fortunately I have the sort of job where I can work from home, and my hours/location don't matter that much as long as we get all our stuff done for release time.

I've been at the hospital since Friday, hence the lack of posts or anything. Today things settled down a little and I was able to walk over to the office (hospital's just down the street). So, at this point I'm still a little fuzzy in the head from lack of sleep and this whole.. recent experience, but once I get her home (hopefully tomorrow) and things quiet down a little I'll start to be around more again. In the meantime, Ray is still moving forward with our UI redux, which is the big thing he and I have been working on to improve the new-user experience, so hopefully that'll be ready for Friday (we'll see).

So, just a heads up about what's going on, thank you all for being patient. We've still got a bunch of great stuff coming, Luis has a whole lineup of cool ships he's been working on, plus Michael's work on the new dynamic economy and the full rollout of the Hive presence in the universe. We're still pushing towards our internal "Vendetta 2.0" goal, and I intend for it to happen in as timely a manner as humanly possible.

It's not quite a newspost, but for what it's worth..

The good thing is that nothing *really* serious has happend. I wish your girlfriend to recover as soon as possible. Don't stress yourself too much with VO - I, for one, can wait.

(drat, double beaten-to-the-punch)..oh, and may the breath of the Void shelter and soothe incarnate and his SO (mizincarnate??) in this difficult time of recovery

Wow, I am simply stunned that your girlfriend is still breathing. As you mentioned, that is nothing short of miracle. It's pretty crazy how life can turn on a dime like that.

Take your time, incarnate. Those you love are the most important things in life. I hope your girlfriend has a smooth and speedy recovery.

John, I'm touched that you revealed this story. I too hope that your girlfriend recovers fully both physically and mentally. I hope you'll be fine in the head too.

I know I won't have any problems if this poses a delay, but as you say, it doesn't. However, it won't matter how long you to me because I will wait patiently.

Some of us complain for crappy things: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/8/13695

She (and you) have topped the list of Shitty Days(tm).

Sit back and relax, both of you. Health and a smile is more important than a weekly release.

Incarnate, you should go buy some lottery tickets, because that's pretty damn lucky that you didn't lose her.

Elsewise, you've worked hard and put long hours into this excellent game, and you(as well as the rest of the devs) deserve an enormous amount of leave without excuse. Concentrate on the girl a bit more than the game, and make sure she gets better.

Thank the gods that she sustained no more damage than she did. My thoughts are with you both. Take care of your business at home Inc, thats the most important. We can and will deal. :-)

First thought: OH MY GOD!

Second Thought: THANK GOD!

Incarnate, take care of her and yourself. I know that I'm not going anywhere if things end up slowing down because of this. I love VO too much and I have too much respect for you devs. Please pass on to your girl that I hope she gets better soon and heals well.

Best wishes to you and your girlfriend Inc,

As has been already said, kudos on putting the important things first.

I hope her recovery is swift, so she can get back to hovering over you as you code late into the night...

Again, best to both of you.
