Some general questions from a newb...
Hi ppl,
I like this game and read the backstory (nice one) and so on, but some things are not completely clear to me:
First of, what is the so called "hive"? I had a mission where I had to follow a ship through some areas and the captain was telling about some things, but it was too fast for my reading skills.
It has something to do with bots and they aren't doing what they should...can someone explain that to me?
And the other one: The wormhole to earth collapsed. But is there an other way to earth implemented in this game, or is it only possible to travel between the 3 parties? (curios)

Welcome!
Hives are groups of rogue sentient robot ships. See the wiki for more details: http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/Hunting_the_Hive
I'm glad you like the backstory. There are many things mentioned in the story that have not yet been implemented in the game, but are planned. There's always something to look forward to.
There is currently no way back to Earth. There is an Earth-like planet in Serco space - Sol II. There are many other destinations among the 3 nations.

ahh, thanks
and thanks for the link to the wiki :)
are the big cannons from the Itari already there? *just curios*
About "other destinations": yeah, read it a few minutes ago in the FAQ, 30 systems as of now, when I calculated that correct and the informations are up-to-date.
about the way back: hmm...would be fun when someday there IS a way back...
oh and one question, again: When there is a big fight, is the backstory updated about that? Or is it "finished"?

There aren't any big fights anymore. The Itani and Serco sit in Deneb and occasionally fling spit wads at each other, but that's about it.
Also, it's spelled "curious".

While I believe the back story is "finished", the game itself is not. The Goliath Cannons and shields have not been implemented.
Support for large-scale battles is being added in stages. Check out the Border Skirmish missions for a taste of what is to come.

It would be neat if galactic "History" could be updated to reflect some of the things that have "happened", RP-wise, in the 5 years since release.
But nothing has happened, RP-wise. The game isn't even mechanically finished yet, much less dynamic and content-ful enough for any real universe-effecting RP events to take place.
Somebody sounds awfully familiar...
Nuthing happened? really ladron?
What about kick ass looking roids?
Did ye try at least to engage conversation with em while waiting for customers in an empty wh sector for RP sake? : )

Before most of the RP in this game withered and died in, oh, I'll say late 2006/early 2007, we did actually have quite a few fun RP things going on, some of which actually might have fit nicely with the backstory.
Right now I'm not sure we actually have any RP events besides the nation wars. And those are technically not RP, just weekly contests, really.
I'm talking about things like the placebo-Xin-addled Mogul Velaio commandeering the Constellation cruiser filled with samoflange that would have closed the Sedina-to-Latos wormhole, or the whole Lexicon battle thing in Geira where FireMage had the flock of ships orbiting gool 'ol Lex in a battle to the death with that telekinetic Camilla girl, or the Toine debacle which ended in a tasty snack for Dr. Lecter (very unexpected and humorous), or any one of the infamous BLAK-involved events whose history runs through these forums like a memory of a completely different (and more fun) game. Hell, even if they would just name the damn bar in Odia M-14 "The Makchuga," that would be fun.
Things like the above add some sense of ownership, like the actions that the players perpetrate have some meaning in the overall scheme of things. Other MMO's do this somewhat, I think VO falls down badly in this aspect of player<-->game interactivity. The best that can be offered is the station newsfeed.

Eh, we're all a little too busy now, Leebs.
@LeberMac and the economy...I haven't seen that in other MMO(RPGS).
My attempted ownership of Sedina b8's asteroids has been constant for 5 years. That should be the new backstory!
