New guy on the block

Hello travelers

I'm new in the universe, arrived yesterday on a trial account which turned into a sub when it expired.
I've got a few questions though, and I'll hope you'll indulge me.

I apologize in advance if this is not the right place, but the forum didn't seem to contain that many categories.

While I had no problem reading the basic starting guides on Wiki and Forum and get the general sense of the game and how it works, I am still left pondering on a few issues.

1.
Where is everyone? For the first 5 to 6 hours I played, maybe I saw 3 or 4 guys in the general chats (1,100,111). And only 1 other player in my nearby systems ever showed.
I'm Itani and ventured mostly in neighboring systems.
Is there a central hub where people hang out? Did I just pick the wrong nation?

2.
What is the average population in peak hours, and what IS peak hours?
I was under the impression a game like this had a big amount of players but after reading the forum today, I read the average player count is something like 45. Is that true?
What impact does this have on gameplay?
While I'm not having problems to find things to do right now, I can imagine player interaction could be a big issue later.

3.
Maturity. Now, I am no stranger to mischief, however I always try to be respectful to a certain degree. I am not trying to step on anyone's toes here, but I do not hope the general maturity level is reflected from what I saw in the general help channel while I played my trial period yesterday.
Although, later in the evening (Europe evening), things did seem to change quite a lot. Some people were arranging "NW"'s, which I could deduct from context is Nation War's where people basically meet up in Grey space and fight Nation vs Nation. At around that time, people seemed friendly enough. Maybe it's a timezone thing?
Anyway, to get to the core of it, what I want to know is, what is the general maturity level?

Maybe I just got the wrong impression of this game and community and it's not really what I was looking for.

I subbed and plan on giving it a shot for the duration of the first month at the very least, but it would be nice to know what I am getting in to.

I know it's a mouthful and I hope someone will take the time to read it and give their 0.02c

- Derpster, Itani.

Hello, I am would like to also join my voice to the query of the original poster.
I would also like to know the maturity numbers. I am very mature for my age, even my mom says so. I would like to know that I are playing in game that is also mature, and is not immature. So please, give us the maturity numbers.

Hi Tukz.

To answer your first question, the VO 'verse is a little different from other MMO's, in that many players don't talk in public channels, and don't want to be found, due to the lack of "safe" places in the 'verse. Traders and miners especially tend to be quiet, elusive types. If you're not using the targetless plugin, it can be easy to miss another ship even in the same sector. That said, Itani space is vast, and often sparsely populated. UIT and Greyspace are the busier places, though correspondingly more dangerous.

As for the average population, it varies, and is very hard to determine. VO has a smallish, but dedicated player base. The "active player" graph gives a relative value, but despite recent claims the numbers have been determined, only the devs really know. That said, during peak times, there are enough players around that traveling in trade/mining ships is very risky, especially throughout UIT and Greyspace, and pvp is usually pretty easy to find. During off-peak (approx. midday, GMT) one can generally haul/trade/mine in relative peace and safety.

As for the maturity level, well, that's like any MMO. Most long time players are good peoples, and generally, even the pirates will help out a newbie, so long as that newbie doesn't get all butt-hurt about getting shot up in a combat game ;) There is plenty of public smack-talk, but a lot of the time, that's all it is. There are a few trolls (like any MMO I s'pose), but for the most part, VO has a great community.

Hope this helps,

Faille.

The only people you're likely to see around Itan and the neighboring systems is newbies below level 3, and there's not always a lot of newbies unless the game gets some press.

If you want to find other players, your best bet is the Grey systems or Deneb. There's almost always somebody lurking around one of the conquerable stations or certain wormholes.

Or maybe one of the capship builders actively or passively looking for hive drops of the local Prosus Hive seated in Metana, and Cantus.

But generally you can find more people in the border regions, such as Deneb, Azek/Latos, Jallik/Edras/Verasi/Pelatus; or in definite pirate haunted systems like Sedina, Odia or Bractus.

The largest trading guild monitors channel 444 give a shout there, and see if somebody turns up. But beware, pirates can easily break channel security, so you may get false replies from non guild members.

Maybe you're right.

Looking for maturity in a game; isn't that an oxymoron?
Oct 28, 2013 Pizzasgood link
Your face is an oxymoron!

No, but seriously, there's nothing innately immature about games.
Oct 28, 2013 TheRedSpy link
Theres maybe nothing innately immature about the content in this game, but actually playing games instead of doing something productive on its face is pretty immature.

Oh I mean.. Your face is innately immature!

Well, if they're being immature, they're probably Serco and you shouldn't talk to those kinds of people. Just hang around and you'll find some cool people to hang out with and shoot stuff. Joining a guild is recommended.

Hi there, tukz

Welcome to VO. I agree with everything Faille, bladerus, and ARF wrote, basically. You may also be interested in finding a mentor. I'd be glad to mentor you. However, although I am online frequently, it is often only briefly. We'd have to find a time to meet up in game regularly, if you are interested.

Also be aware of channel 4357, maintained by the Vipers; it's a general pirate-sighting and pirate-related channel. Pirates use that channel sometimes, too. The Vipers themselves are anti-pirates.

Right TRS, because the mature thing to do is to eschew emotional health for the sake of working continuously with no room for relaxation. Be a cog in that machine!

1. Where is everyone?

I often refer to Itani space as the ass end of the galaxy. The only people you will find there, are people that don't want to be found, so good luck finding them. In general, in most all of the VO galaxy, the only place it is easy to find people, are people you don't really wish to find. Pirates, over zealous nationalist/vigilantes, etc, in Sedina B8 and other hotspots in grey space.

2. What is the average population in peak hours, and what IS peak hours?

The average population at any given time is a rather closely guarded secret. There is no one here that both can tell you, and will tell you. Those that know, won't say, and those who would say, don't know.
Peak hours can be determined from the active players link on your left.

2a. I read the average player count is something like 45. Is that true?

Close enough.

2b. What impact does this have on gameplay?

There is often a shortage of "live" targets. About the only targets you are likely to find, are players who think that you are the target.

3. what is the general maturity level?

The maturity level is/was typical of the internet in general, perhaps somewhat lower now that you have joined. I am amused at your own delusion that you are somehow any more mature than average. If you actually where more mature, other people's maturity would not be a concern to you. perhaps of greater concern to you, is that there are a number of intellectual types that play, that will see through your facade, and call you on it. Perhaps you would be better served to search for a game that attracts intellectually challenged players.

Thanks for posting, and good luck.

An epically well-turned phrase. Roda wins thread.

Nobody wrote a narrative poem about how well-turned the phrase was.

I saw no such implication in the OP. I also met Derpster/tukz in game. Again, no such "delusion" was evident. Perhaps Roda was projecting something?

Reply to original posters questions and sub questions

Regarding posters questions #1
-limited number of players = yes,
-not really a central hangout hub,
-and as serco preferred yes but not relative to your questions as it might pertain to observing other players.

Regarding posters questions #2.
-average population in peak hours I have no clue,
-peak hours I have no clue,
-actual average player count 45 sounds possible but it is unknown and undisclosed so can mostly be speculated and totally subjective.
-impact on game play is mostly subjective. I personally want to see massive player interaction and battles, massive numbers of freight haulers, massive numbers of pirates and massive guild activity etc. but others seem to enjoy it with or without other players so it depends on the individual.

Regarding posters questions #3
- This is slightly subjective but from the response posts you likely have an idea of what you will be subject to as with any other game out there.

Regarding posts on maturity and games. Why would playing games have any relationship to maturity at all ?
The entire world is playing games and most of them can't wait for more time to do it LOL

@Captain86: It is not really necessary for you to make a post stating that: "I have no clue". In your case, I am confident that most players are already aware that you don't have a clue, and you making a post confirming the point is redundant. If on the other hand you actually get a clue, that might be considered news to some, and perhaps worthy of a post.
