The whole 'eh, I'll keep an eye on things and see what happens in a year or two...maybe I'll resub then' thing isn't too relevant, because an improved f2p model means better newbie retention, which leads to more targets, which is really, really tempting. Even for someone surrounded by piles of no money like me.

The most fun you can have in this game is being chased and hunted by a pack of angry newbies. You can even do them and the game a service by taking a fall once in a while and handing them a modest bounty for their trouble.

You should try convincing them to invite you to their pirate hunting group and then pick them off as they arrive in the sector, complaining that you mistook the white dots to mean an enemy.

Not that I've ever done that.... recently.

I've been out of town all week on a conference / meeting trip, interesting to come back and see how things have.. continued :).

Thanks for understanding, everyone. I do think that although this development may not directly give shiny cool stuff to veterans, the sheer improvements in player count have got to count for something.

We still have not yet publicly announced anything about F2P, shipped any press releases, or done any mailing list notifications or anything, and as it stands:

- We are peaking, every week, at more players online than we were during the Free Holiday Promo this year (which was our last high point).

- The numbers just keep going up. I'm thinking with the upcoming improvements, along with some press and a whole other device/platform launch, you're likely to see a lot of people showing up.

The post I wrote earlier still holds true.. and then some (site hosting the graph is temporarily offline).

So, I think all of this will be good for the feel of the universe and the health of the community. The positive reviewers on the Play Store are clearly MMO veterans, not just "Angry Birds" types (VO definitely requires some dedication to figure out), so I'm optimistic that this will be a good thing for everyone.
