Making an Ingame Vendetta Database

Heyas... just wanted to let you all know that I was about to undertake a possibly lengthy project which would make essentially a small encyclopedia that you could look at ingame.

I have just one question before I start... will the game accept the aliases and commands if it loads a .txt file that contains them?

yes, loading a file that has commands should work fine as long as they're valid commands. That's how the wgaf.cfg file is loaded.

Sounds cool :). This idea (which we called the "Universal Information Database") has been a part of our documented design for a long time. We basically wanted to create a hyperlink-like system within the engine that would allow such a thing to be navigated or referenced from any other text, with 3D views of the discussed objects or topics, etc.

Anyway, good luck with your project. I hope at some point we can build a fully integrated resource like that.

you could have entrys for each known player, like crimeinal records and background and stuff

At the moment only things like Nations, Guilds and Sector Tidbits are gonna be in it to save space.

At the moment it:
a) puts you in multilog mode
b) sets you in log 1
c) replaces the weapon selection buttons with navigation controls
d) has one entry, "The Itani Nation"

Next is the Serco Dominion.

This is supposed to be used in a quiet sector, away from the hustle and bustle of the pirates and the like, because basically it spams your chat with echo commands... ^.^ I selected log1 because it's rarely used, and the database would fit in pretty well there for rp value. If you need to check the chat, switch to another log, and then go back to log1 when ready. I have one or two people already who are willing to look at it as it goes along and test it, so I think this should be a nice addition to the Vendetta Universe.

I will gladly contribute SDF and general Serco Dominion information should you desire.

My email is jaredalaska@hotmail.com should you wish to contact me other than the boards or in-game. I dont mind either way.

At the moment the first category (Nations) has all of the entries complete; it is now undergoing bugtesting/proofreading.

Each entry is (atm) 3 or four lines long totaling about 320 characters including spaces. Additions to the entries may be added at a later version.

Please note that I only have seven slots for entries if I'm gonna bind them to keys as you navigate through the database using the model used in the first category. For the nations category I use the !,@,#,$,% keys to go to Itani, Serco, Neutral, Pirate, and Furie entries respectively, and the *,(,) keys to scroll backwards, forwards, and move up one level.
I'm thinking of separating guilds based on nations, ie, ! going to Itani guilds, @ to Serco, # to Neutral, $ to Mixed Nationality, and % to Pirate ones, leaving the scroll keys as they are. I will have to employ something entirely different for the Sector Tidbits section however. But as Bra'tac is so fond of saying, "we shall cross that bridge when we come to it."

I'll test, proofread and contribute. I remember lots of Itani History, after all. But it'd be cooler if this was integrated into stations as a tab.

What about a wiki-like system, such as the one used over at wikipedia.org?

Im sorry this may have already been answered but I cant find it, when exactly is the "planned" finishing date? I understand it's probably not going to be then but after that point I will check IRC.

ETA of v0.1 FINAL: sometime this week. Brings a 3-category database with a simple scrolling system into play. Is only accessable outside the station.
In the works for v0.2: In-station functionality, a less text-intensive scrolling method (if possible)

Rgr, just tell me when and how and I'll run the thing into the ground (*cough* station *cough*) and test it well.

Version 0.1 is finished. Those that are testers, I will need your emails if I can't get DCC working (which is very unlikely as it has never worked sending, only recieving for me.
Version 0.1 includes:
-Nation Entries
--for the storyline nations
--the Furies and Pirates
-Guild Entries
--divided by member nation (Itani, Serco, NT, and Mixed)
--Pirate Guilds
-Sector database
--19 entries
---Includes Sector and Station names
---background on sectors

"In the pipe" for version 0.2: in dock capablility... we all know it's needed. Should be a relatively quick and painless changing of alias names and adding in of a few lines of code.
