What is the significance of Teams?

May 06, 2004 webman2k link
Hey there all,

I downloaded this last night, and I'm currently exhausted from being up all night playing this fantastic game. I do have a quick question though.

It appears that there are teams in the game, but I was wondering how it works. How do you know what team you're on? Are teams associated with sectors or races? Are there any specific advantages to being on a team?

I only ask because (at this stage of development) there really isn't and human to human combat yet. Are teams like groups? Are they meant for use later in development?

Anyhoo - I'd like to say thank you for making this game, as I've really waited for something like this my entire life. I just hope the final price isn't too high :)

Thanks for your time!

Currently the teams are: Itani (blue), Serco (red), and Neutral Territories (gold). Their home sectors are 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The reason for having teams is because it has more to do with the storyline than anything else. You've made the correct assumption that they have to do with the type of race the player is in. However, as the game becomes more developed, you'll have to worry more about faction standing than just three different races. You can find a teaser of Vendetta's story and how the game will work in the future at the official website. Just go under products and click at the "see here" link under Vendetta™.

There are teams and there are teams and there are teams...let me explain:

There are teams...NATIONS...Red(Serco), Blue(Itani) and Gold(Neutral Territories). The significance of these teams is waning in this release as there is now more emphasis on character development and less on Nation warring. The significance that remains depends on your goals. If you prefer to be a trader, being on NT affords you the benifit of having Serco and Itani as neutral to your race. If you prefer to be a warrior, being on either Serco or Itani affords you a built-in enemy nation. If you want to be cool...Serco is your only logical choice.

Then, there are teams...FACTIONS...collections of pilots from the same nations such as the Itani National Military or Serco Defence Force...groups created for mutual defence, assistance...etc. OR, factions of cross-nation pilots (soon to be implemented)...examples might be pirate factions or trading factions. Groups created for the same reasons as Nation factions.

And lastly, there are teams...GROUPS...(just implemented). A collection of pilots from the same or different nations, formed to complete "Group Missions" for mutual benefit.

Choose a team then, choose a team then, choose another team....we are VERY flexible!

Thanks for the detailed description RelayeR :)

Perhaps we should refer to these things as they are, and not all teams. For instance, when I Team chat in the game, who am I really talking to? This should probably be separated to avoid confusion.

Team Chat speaks to all National Ships (anyone of YOUR nation)
Global Chat speaks to EVERY pilot
GRoup speaks to your group
Sector speaks to the sector you are currently in

Just to toss in some more information to you webman2k, (welcome to the community BTW) The Player Vs Player (PvP) element of the game has recently been drastically downplayed with the release of the new factions system. since the current system is fairly basic, and only adjusts faction standing based on kills, (not who fired first, just who killed who) pvp combat is a risky undertaking.

There are currently 3 nations as mentioned above, and all of the "non-aligned" sectors in the middle, (5,7,8,9,10,11,13, and a few others that are hidden/secret). as a pilot of one of the main 3 nations, the nation you choose will determine how the non-alligned sectors feel aabout you when you first start the game. After that, the actions you take will alter and adjust those reputations accordingly.

Webman2k, it was great fun last night playing with you!

to add to what everyone has said, I'll give you some helpful things:

Chat information
------------------------
/bind y sector (this allows you to talk to everyone in a sector.

/bind Y say_group (this allows you to talk to anyone in a group, if you're in one)

/alias MsgTarget 'prompt '/msg %target%''

/bind U MsgTarget (these two allow you to hit whatever key you bind and it will open a private message box to whoever you've targeted)
-------------------------

Major differences between nations:

Serco (red) are warlike, and more prone to attack anyone.

Itani (blue) are at war with Serco but the vast majority don't target Neutral pilots.

Neutral Territories (gold) are truly neutral and may fly anywhere in the galaxy, including Serco and Itani territory--as long as they don't kill any players from that nation! The NT are traders, and I think that they have some benefits in that area of gameplay (better prices, possibly).

To find out what nation you are, hit "t" and say something in global chat--your chat color corresponds with your nation.

Thank you very much SirCamps, and the rest of you - it was a lot of fun. I must say, last night being my first time online with this game, I was expecting a lot of flaming from long timers with all of my "newbie" questions. I was very pleased with the kindness of everyone I asked questions to.

I'm probably going to be online most nights. I can't wait to get my first real ship - lot's more drones to kill first though :) I think I found the MMORPG for me. I just hope the monthly cost is doable.

That would be the Vulture, unlocked at level 4/3/3 ;)

I assume (by default) that you're itani? that means you can experiment with PvP with serco players (but don't kill the Neutral nation pilots).
we can spar when you get a vulture : )
