Dev Required Reading--reputation system

Jun 01, 2004 AlienB link
Recently, there have been many discrepencies using the reputation in ways that I'm going to assume you guys didnt mean it to be used.

Now, players on all sides have done this. We've seen a number of Neutral pirates pop up, as well as blue and red griefers who have somehow managed to get loved in a large amount of sectors. Said individuals will attack a convoy/player/etc and run with all their might to a protected system, if they're not already in one. Griefer/whatever will then allow said player to kill them. Now, the thing is, if you don't kill them, they'll kill you. The current stupidity with the reputation system is it does NOT permit you to defend yourself in any form. Griefers really have nothing to lose if they kill a player that they're trying to pirate/force a standing loss. The player, however innocent and friendly they may be, are completely helpless unless they're willing to be locked out of a station. I'm not suggesting some equally exploitable simple fix. I really don't have one, and that's not my job. Unless this is intended, I really strongly request some form of fix, or perhaps even have the system disabled until the new universe can come around. This is _not_ what people should have to deal with.

AlienB....of COURSE there's going to be a fix. This is a test, and we are all testing the faction system. It doesn't work quite right at the moment - like many features of Vendetta. This stage of the test is about getting the mechanics of the game to work. Balance and fine-tuning will come later - before the release. I agree with your last statement, with a small qualification: This is _not_ what PAYING people should have to deal with. We are playtesters, and this is exactly what we should have to deal with.

I'm not sure what the deal with the pic was supposed to be, although it seems like it might be a little flame-baity.
[Edit: I see the point of the pic now, but did you really have to call it that?]

one question though... what's so stupid about that pic? I don't see anything stupid. Unless you're saying that you almost got Arolte.

FM, some how i dont think there will be a flame war about it here. read (not the post), that's what you do best here:)

The point he's trying to make is that he's being chased around by damaged busses trying to get him to kill them so that he will lose faction points.

Fear my bus of doom! I got a Valk and a Warthog to back off with it. It was fun.

It is however annoying ...

But it is more annoying that someone with the best equipment in the game just goes around killing everybody else having lesser equipment to the point of logging off and if you try to resist they tempt you with being blocked dockingrights to the places where they reached high admire. With as result that you just stop your testing and wait on the bigger universe or hope for a fix.

I cant kill a valk or any other ship that has a better engine and better weapons. It is already hard and repetetive enough to test all the facets of the levelling up system that getting killed without a chance of defending yourselve is to say the least irritating.

I hope that these holes within the code will be fixed, and im pretty sure that they will. I only urge that people use one rule, namely if this happens to me would I like it, in stead of always stating that they do it for roleplaying or bugtestingpurposes. Dont do to others what you dont want to be done to yourselves :(.

And FM, this is not even what testing people should be here for. I dont enter a testingground just to let myself be molested on every point of the test. I am here to test the features implemented, not to be abused. I am lucky however that I know multiple people and that they leave me alone for that part. But I have seen so many less known people log on and getting themselves blown over and over again just in the name of roleplaying or in general boredom by people that reached their goals and are tired of the repetetiveness off botting or the dullness of trading.

But for the time being, a lot would help if you take out the gauss and the sunflare... Or make them usuable only in appointed sectors which newer or non warlike people can avoid easilly. "quick fix, I think"

I am in MMORPGs not to rule, but to socialize with people, and I hope that that will be possible in the final release.

cheers

andy nailed it. Sherpa, I'm aware that I'm not paying for the game, but I agree with renegade. We really should not have to put up with other "testers" who misuse the system simply for their own malicious enjoyment. This thread is not intended to be a complaint, I just want the devs to be aware of this issue. It seems they have, so a lock would be fine to prevent flaming. Thanks

Fair enough. They DO know, and balance will come. My point was that because we are testers we should expect things to be funky, but I hear what you are saying about players who may seem to be going out of their way just to be malicious.

Yes, I am very aware of the issue and I don't like the implementation. Things will change drastically with the new universe; you will have to travel for a very long time in order to see people of an "enemy nation". The faction penalties are supposed to be harsh, as murder is naturally looked down on. But what's missing from the game right now is: a) enforcement of no-fire zones near stations, and b) enough space to spread out so that you don't have to fight people in plain view of factions who might not appreciate the roughhousing. Not to mention enough missions to make the game worth playing.

This is all coming.

I was aware the problem would exist before it ever cropped up. Problems like this are inherent to having half-implemented designs. We're working on addressing it, by finishing the game.

Thanks for the heads-up though :).
