A Warning!

Look guys.. I just skimmed this thread, I don't have time to read it right now, but here are the basic facts:

We are supported by our own funding, which we acquired back in uhh.. March? I'm sure you all remember when we went from "Going out of business" to "Holy crap, we're actually going to finish this".

As such, we have defined the release schedule, not anyone else. Our schedule is determined by how much money we have left. This made a Summer release necessary. I think we've been saying Summer since like.. well, probably around March, when we initially figured this all out.

SFI has been very positive about the game, there is nothing in any part of any current featureset or lack of featureset that has anything to do with input from them. The game is defined by us.

SFI is our retail distribution and marketing partner, but we are directly handling all online recurring payments.

SFI is only our distribution partner in North America, we did not sign worldwide. We may select them in other regions as well, but we will make that decision when the time comes.

I have heard very different stories about what happened with Cornered Rat and WWII Online. I'm not interested in rumormongering, but I wouldn't be so quick to lay all the blame on the Big Bad Publisher. But.. I wasn't there. I'm sure it was a very unfortunate situation all round, and back when it happened I recall thinking "oh god, I hope that's not us someday". I have no concerns over being pushed to an early release by anyone other than ourselves.. our schedule has been defined by us. This schedule would have been essentially the same whether we had secured retail distribution with SFI or not.

The deal with SFI means that the game will be appearing in retail stores and have an actual marketing budget. This will hopefully make the game known to a broader base of people, and bring us more users. It's a win all round, with relatively minimum risk as far as we're concerned.

Also, just as an educational note, Vendetta Online is a project wholly owned and created by Guild Software, Inc. There's a big difference between a game funded, owned and created by a major publisher (like say, Infogrames or EA or whatever).. versus a game wholly owned by an independent studio and distributed through a publisher. Not quite the same animal.

I don't know what the future holds for us, whether with our launch or our final product or whatever.. but if problems arise, chances are the place to lay the blame will be at our feet (or more specifically, at my feet). This game is our creation and our project. Whether we find success or failure, it will be because of the decisions we (Guild Software) make. So.. if you've had faith in us before, don't lose it now on account of a distribution agreement.
