For the final product

Wooo, I've been here for over a year and a half... :P

Actually, the board could have, for example, 10 columns of users. Assuming 10,000 active user accounts over time, that's 1000 lines. Stick 50 or so in a line, and have it scroll slowly. You could probably have all the names looping every 10 minutes or so...

**EXTREMELY** well put, Pyroman_Ace! Thank you!

Thank you sinclair

Pyro, having ALL 10,000+ Chars isn't all that effiecent either to display on a credits page nor on any page really, no one will sit through it to see everyone.

I think that having it set-up where you have just the username and maybe their primary char (eg. Pyroman_Ace "[SDF] Black 1") would work or just have each tester pick their favorite way to be remembered (eg. Jared "Black 1" Woody -or- Pyroman_Ace -or- [SDF] Black 1) might work as well.

I dunno, I'm sure that if the Devs want a credit page they'll figure it out.

A simple page with a dedication to ALL testors is more than we need.

A simple gold/titanium plaque with "Thanks" written in pearls...who could possible ask for more?

Fireworks in the background would be ni.......ok, I'm done now.

(bows and exits...stage left)

[edit] Did I mention confetti, falling on the screen? Ok...bye [/edit]

Most games/software the testers just get their names in the credits.

Really, I think a big payoff is being able to horse around on the server when the devs aren't too busy. You learn a lot about the game making process and what's in store for the future (like when a1k0n drove the frig). THAT'S a reward in itself. The other reward is getting to know a bunch of awesome people from all over the damn place, from people who are only a short drive away to people who are a long plane ride away. If the devs decide they do want to commend the people who occasionally gave some very valuable input and helped work out some kinks, I think a "Special thanks to the testers" would be more than enough. You don't need to list everyone. Just a big, group thing. Because that's what we are. We're a group, we're a gang, we're a community, a collective. That's how I'd prefer to be thanked.

The issue about having everyone's name on the credits:

This is an online test, and over 1000 accounts has been signed up on Vendetta Test. How can you place 1000 names on credits without causing people to fall asleep :P.

A special thanks would be enough for me, or a totally seperate 'Thanks' credits... thanking all the testers, donators, pizza-release-delayers... ect...

An insane credit list doesn’t seem necessary. I don’t think many new users would bother viewing it in any case.
An easier way to commemorate testers is to perhaps add the word Tester after our rank in our charinfo. If a new user does /charinfo on any of us (and they most likely will), they will take notice. Maybe a T (or some other symbol) can be added to our usernames on the sector userlist. When the game comes out, n00bs can use the userlist to ask known testers for help.

Nice idea Harvestmouse.
This thread seems to have become 'lost' though. The initial question was will the Beta testers get to play the p2p game for free, NOT how are we going to get any thanks.
Playing the 'test' is thanks enough.
Jun 20, 2004 silentsuicide link
Agreed everything that has been done for us is thanks enough. I will happy to pay for this when it is p2p to support guild. But I think harvestmouse's idea is a good one. For the initial release of the game to help with all the new players so they can have somebody who can anwser all their questions and know that the person they are talking to knows what they are talking about and not just shout RTFM at them. More for a helping out players standpoint rather than recognition as being a tester.

>"This thread seems to have become 'lost' though. The initial question was will the Beta testers get to play the p2p game for free, NOT how are we going to get any thanks."<

The reason this thread has strayed from the original question is because the question, IMO, should not have been asked. A look back in the thread list would have given this player the answer and it isn't very practical to think anyone would get a free account. [edit] In his defense, he is new and doesn't realize what he asks is contrary to the history of this test and the situations the Devs found themselves in. [/edit]

In response to the implied question as to how testers should be rewarded, this thread developed to what it is now.

IMO the thread should have been locked after the first post, but FM's have lives too, so we will have to put up with the rather arrogant post for a while longer.

An extension on harvestmouse's idea, T for Tester and maybe VT for Veteran Tester

Veteran Tester=1 year or longer
Tester=under 1 year
Jun 20, 2004 Starfisher link
The only thing I'm hoping for is that they let us keep the names we have now. Though I doubt anyone would steal Starfisher right off the bat...
Jun 20, 2004 Pyroman_Ace link
I'm sure the Devs will let us have first pick of our accounts and char names Fishy.

I like the T/VT idea Phoe and Harvestmouse brought up. Although I might suggest adding a NT (no joke) for New Tester, those that haven't been around for very long, like Bulishor, so that it's possible to distiguish between all 3 ranks of tester.

Maybe the NT/T/VT could be displayed in the form of a medal next to our nick

VT= Gold
T= Silver
NT= Bronze

-or-

VT= 5-prong star
T= 4-prong "nova" star
NT= 3-prong star

There is always room for in-game easter eggs. I think it would be cool if a bot grabs random tester's names off a database base in game with some kind of cool message ie

"Congratulations to Phoenix who just broke the record of most trips through sec 9's wormhole."

Well, you get what I'm saying, but I'm not very creative.
Jun 20, 2004 Pyro link
I like it, but the problem is that it doesn't really honor the people who were here for a long time, but left...
Jun 21, 2004 SirCamps link
A simple nova star next to any tester's name is enough to signify the person's status. A dev would have a different color star, and a guide/moderator, a third kind. Anything more complex is either an ego trip for the person suggesting it or just plain too difficult for the devs to implement.
Jun 21, 2004 harvestmouse link
*I know that we're going horribly off-topic... but a title "For the final product" isn't the epitome of precision, right?*
sure, colored stars would work (though they wouldn't be as self-explanatory as the word "tester" or "guide"); good to have some way to tell who's a dev/guide too.

Just have an icon key....

On the subject of honoring vets, it's kinda disappointing to see that someone's name isn't on it, who, in my opinion, has made the biggest contribution to the game. Just because someone has a loud mouth or has been here a while doesn't mean that they are a veteran tester. They might be a veteran POS for all I care.

Anyways, I'd like to thank Celebrim for being the contribution that he is to Vendetta. No one rivals his well-thought-out and genius ideas. Even though I might not see Sharper or some of his other characters in the game 24/7, his contribution is real and significant. If only one person gets mentioned, I'd have it be him.
