"Is there any kind of global chat other than long range?"

"Ok, I don't understand the chat system... what I say in global chat (t) seems to be just sector chat now. Sometimes I see nation chat but don't know how to use it. Shift-t doesn't work anymore. Now... How do I talk?"

"Could someone explain how to chat now? I seem to talk to myself in global chat, teamchat doesn't work, and I just see in-sector talk."

Hey, the last two are mine :)

Ok, I know now that normal chat is equal to sector chat, and there's also a system chat (/say_system) and a very limited global chat (from the station).

We can still create groups and use /say_group, or /msg to any player, and... hmm, that's all I found out.

No, /say_sector is as before. It's only sector-wide.

Yes. I should have posted this earlier:

- Normal chat ('t' key) is just within 3000m of your ship. Use this for conversations with people nearby.
- Sector chat (/say_sector, unbound by default?) is sector wide. Limited to once every ten seconds or thereabouts.
- System-wide chat (/say_system) is system-wide and limited to once a minute.
- Nation chat is broadcast to all systems within the territory which owns the station you are broadcasting from. For example, sending a nation chat from the 'Long range' tab within a Serco station will send the chat to all Serco systems. This is also limited to once a minute.
- "The Bar" is simply chat with other people inside the same station you are in.
- Private messages work as before.
- Group chat works as before.
- If you have buddies, you can leave a message for them when they return online with /buddy note <player> <message>.

In general, the wider audience you're broadcasting to, the longer the time limit between broadcasts you get. This system was designed for use by thousands of people simultaneously without becoming a total flood of chat everywhere.

Normal chat and "the bar" are the best places to talk to people you might want to group up with. Long range chat and system-wide chat allow you to voice a request for help or backup or group members without subjecting everyone in the universe with the details of what you need and who is helping you and where you are.

Don't forget guild chat (shift-g)

It broadcasts to nobody in a beautiful shade of yellow.

Does guild chat mean guilds are supported now?
Jun 24, 2004 roguelazer link
No. a1k0n accidentally put in the guild chat function without the guild function, because there is no working guild function yet. Or something like that. :D

Accidentally? Pshaw! He was being proactive in preparing for the guild feature ahead of time.

I had nothing to do with Guild chat. Ray was being proactive in adding it, even though it lacked a definition of its existence.

Will there be any "chat room" type channel so we can chat without losing trade missions or screwing up our turboing with PMs? Either that or just make hitting tab while the chat dialog is open not stop your thrust. Either of those would be fine.

This isn't true... not yet, anyways.

You can recieve messages from Itani space in Serco territory through nation chat.

For those who need to chat quick and make their thoughts known:

alias misnkey "mission 1; prompt '/mission'"
bind , say_sector
bind . say_system
bind < say_group
bind > misnkey

Type the above five lines in your wgaf.ini or wgaf.cfg file, whichever it is depends on your OS.

Just recently found during a short burst of brain activity.

/say_nation is the console command for nation chat. However, it still does not work outside of a station.

...I just realized this was the 23000th post to this forum. Go General Forum!
