Nav System Weakness

Jun 25, 2004 RattMann link
Well, a few days into the game and I have developed a "love/hate" relationship with it. The Nav System is interesting, but has a "fatal" flaw, and that could be fatal to your character. You cannot decide your course in advance (in-station)
but must do it in flight. As soon as you bring up the Nav, you are blind AND
defenceless. I found this out the hard way, when I was attacked by another player (lost 35% of my hull before I could grab the mouse) and another time when I was jumped by a Sentry Bot while I was making a few notes (70% hull loss). Ouch.
AND, I read that there is supposed to be a 15 second count-down?? What for???

Imagine for a moment: a 7000+ sector Universe, about 14 players logged in, and I get found by a hostile player while attempting to navigate. What are the odds? No, don't bother to work it out.....

Odds are around 500/1 :P

Anyway, if you have a good ship setup like, huy/huy, you can hold down tab (turbo) than hit "n" and click on the sector, then hit "esc", and when you reach 3000m away, hit "n" again and click "plot course" and away you fly!!!

Simple, type /+turbo to lock in the turbo, then go to the navigational screen. I would, however, like to plot a multi-warp course, a la the Escape Velocity series, by holding down "shift" and clicking on sectors and wormholes to plot multiple jumps.

Second request: Allow us to bind the Plot Course command to a key.

I'd be happy with using "n" to go back OUT of the nav screen. I mostly take damage trying to get my mouse to "cancel"

The only purpose a multi-jump system would serve is make it harder for us honest pirates to chase down traders. Almost impossible, in fact.

Yes it would be nice to be able to toggle the nav screen. At the moment there is no 15 second countdown. This is one of those things that will probably have to be observed for a little while to see what the best course of action is in order to achieve balance.

I'd suggest a precaution similiar to always hitting "u" when you undock or jump in to a sector: try to plot a course of escape before you actually need it.

It's a heck of a lot better without the 15 second countdown... 3000 meters + 15 seconds was just way too much...

"I'd suggest a precaution similiar to always hitting "u" when you undock or jump in to a sector"
Heh, I got into the habit of doing that, and now I just do it reflexively... It's sort of scaring me...

Yes...I ALWAYS use the "u" key. There was no one in the sector when I arrived.
I agree with "stick" (except for his computation of the odds). His strategy seems to work well when not under a direct threat. Time will tell. I also agree with "SirCamps" - plotting multiple jumps would be great.

I'm glad you survived both attacks.

Another suggestion I have to others is to develope a character that is resistant to attacks. One with good standing with all factions. One that is helpful to others. One that doesn't engage in flamage. One that is liked.

good idea, RelayeR.
also: One that will pwn all who attack him. *g*

Did someone call? ;P

I've also realised one major thing if someone attacks you. Attack back. I was scared to death that my standing would drop; but with the new universe and all losing a ship AND GETTING KICKED BACK TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNIVERSE is a lot worse than having to kill a couple of bots to regain standing :P
Jun 26, 2004 harvestmouse link
aye. set an example with the first attacker. and the next. and then again!
(I'm not saying that's what I do... but seems like a nice idea, don't you think?)

UncleDave: indeed, yes =)

Killing someone loved by Corvus in a Corvus sector won't hurt your standing.

If anything, killing someone loved by Corvus in a Corvus sector should INCREASE your standing, such is their nature... >:)

Killing anyone in Corvus won't affect your standing!
