TeamSpeak - re-revisited

Sep 10, 2004 Futt link
Well there've been attempts at setting up teamspeak servers before, but none of them seem to be operational at the moment. Has anyone got one running?

I've set one up on a 2mbit line which I would be willing to "donate" to the cause of keeping the beta players in touch with eachother during and outside of gameplay. If anyone else has one sitting on a better line (or there is one already in common use) please reply here =)

(address for mine is futt.org - open for anon users, no password, please be gentle :P)

Where could a fella go to find information on hosting a server? I maintain a couple of websites.. i bet i could host a server on one without anybody noticing. :)

Well all you need to do is install the TeamSpeak server software on the machine - there's a Linux and a Windows version of the server. You can grab the software at http://www.goteamspeak.com/ or (if Linux and you have root access) snag it from your distributions package repository. Then there's some configuring to do - nothing too bad and it's all well documented.

Let me know if you need a hand, have done it a few times =)

I had a server up for a while, but the only person that ever used it was some brit that I couldnt understand. I'll be on a 1mbit up line pretty soon, I'll probably run one on my firewall then.

is team speak really a good idea now? guild chat is and that is implemented... because someone who starts on serco can suddenly decide that he wants his alligence to be with itani and with the current rep system it wont be that hard for ppl to change sides like that, also with the ability to change ship color you are never tied down to only one nation. so suppose there are former itani who are now allied to serco or vice a versa and then say itani forces decides to go on a rampage on the serco or whatever, the former itani will know all that is happening, plus with team speak, the itani that is now serco will not know when serco is planning something because of team speak. i think the current system is good. But i suppose if the team speak that you were activated on was the nation you had the highest rep on, then maybe that could work...

They're talking about "TeamSpeak" which apparently is a voice chat system. Not team chat - which I think should be put back in.

I wonder how such a system would work (esp. in linux)- since it seems that vendetta eats all keyboard commands. Would TeamSpeak catch the push-to-talk button and other buttons before vendetta? It would be nice if I could switch virtual desktops during the game, but I can't do that now.

And I've always held the opinion that the cost vs. benefit of voice chat is not good enough yet. And then there's the international issue, and the understandability issue AlienB brought up...

TeamSpeak works fine in Linux, it grabs the keyboard at a lower level than Vendetta does. I hosted a server for several months, never had more than 5 people in at a time. SF's server had several. I remember one time when 4 of us Blues were in it and we capped Red. That was fun.

There's been a rewrite of TeamSpeak in progress for about 2 years to port it to a multiplatform C++ core known as TS3. It might be done by the time the Capital Ship expansion pack comes out. Or it might not.
