Sep 23, 2004 Agonizer link
I received the following message from notify@guildsoftware.com 10 minutes ago:

" Your Vendetta Online account will be expiring soon. We are cleaning out our database of inactive players in order to make way for a new beta. This brief warning message is going out to everyone who hasn't played the game in at least 6 months, or signed up longer than a month ago and never actually played."

WTF?

I signed up a long time ago.. yes... but i am online very often. The last time ~12 hours ago, and i think some other ppl. here can confirm that.

Why did i get this notification if i dont belong to the above (in the mail) mentioned group of people? I hope you'll not delete my account in error :)

I got it too but, I'm presuming it went out to everyone that has *characters* that have not been used as stated.

I wouldn't worry, Agonizer but, some reassurance from a dev would be nice.

I have only 2 chars, used both in the last two weeks, and also got the email. I guess somebody made a SQL-typo :)

hehe.. I was about to panic when I checked my email, and then I thought, 'if this is a mistake, surely I'm not the only one.. maybe somebody posted something in the forum' :-)

I got the same message. I've been playing as much as possible for the last 2 weeks.

I've got 1 char I haven't played in a while and 2 that I have.

Maybe this is a bug?

Maybe you should finish reading the email.

I haven't yet recieved one... Perhaps it's because I updated my account info (changed e-mail addy) about a month ago?

In some cases (i.e. RelayeR's) it's probably because you have multiple accounts with your email address on them, and you're only using one. In other cases, that list may have been generated before you started playing again. John or I may have mixed up the latest email lists. Unused characters don't matter if you have at least one used character.

I feel so left out.

So do I, I quickly checked my e-mail when I saw this post and there wasn't any message for me. :)

This was helpful.

AlienB: I read it a few times. It states that my account will expire soon. That the messages was sent to anyone who hasn't played in 6 months. Nothing about "If you got this is error" or "Multiple characters". Just that my account (NOT character) will expire due to inactivity. I haven't been inactive (not in vendetta-land anyway).

Reading the whole message didn't enlighten me to any mitigating circumstances. What does your copy say?

Your Vendetta Online account will be expiring soon. We are
cleaning out our database of inactive players in order to make way for a
new beta. This brief warning message is going out to everyone who hasn't
played the game in at least 6 months, or signed up longer than a month ago
and never actually played.
If you would like to keep your Vendetta Online account, you simply
need to play the game before monday. If you no longer have the game
installed, you can re-download it by going to:

http://www.vendetta-online.com

Log in with your login/password (if you have forgotten your
password, it can be emailed to you), and then click on Downloads. The act
of actually playing the game will trigger your account to no longer be
expired.

We don't want to lose any of our old Test users, but if you've
moved on, we understand. If you do not wish to play anymore, or be
contacted by us again, simply do nothing (do not reply) and your account
and associated email address will be silently deleted from our database on
Monday the 27th.
If you would like to come back and help in testing once again, we
welcome the assistance. With the game launching in stores next month and
the beta opening shortly, there's a great deal to be done and lots of
changes taking place in the game. At the end of beta we also plan to have
some sort of "thank you" for those who have diligently helped us test over
the years.
Thanks again.

Summary: Want to keep your account? Play before monday.

I realize this may seem like a temptest in a teacup, but hear me out.

Guild sent this to inactive AND active players. They seem to not be 100% sure who hasn't played over the last 6 months. If that is the case, are they going to be 100% sure about who doesn't log back in over the next couple days?

They sent it to me thinking I haven't been playing (when I have). I don't want my beta account deleted because of a bug in an account purge script. We're all a little geeky here, so we tend to prize our game beta accounts, that's why we signed up, right? (That and helping out on a really cool game).

You're so right! I mean, how the hell is their server going to know if I connected to it?!?
I'd hate to loose my elitism and become just like everyone new in all respects but my inner knowledge of the game! That would so totally suck!

As I already said before, the list was probably generated before some of you came back.
