Actually, we can, if we "triangulate". Remember that the emote command has changed for the new UI, to /me from me, and so what you type in one version is displayed wrong on the other (i.e. I type "/me sucks" in the new UI, in the old UI you see "/me sucks" while in the new you see "Jex sucks"). So you get one observer in each UI, have the pilots emote something, and then both observers compare notes to insure the guy is running the old UI.
