are Copyright Infringement Laws avoidable?

May 09, 2006 drdoak007 link
This might be a nullified idea, but we are all thinking it!

just once, i would like to be flying around and stumble accross either "Capt. Jayneway and her (lost) Enterprise" or "Event Horizon" or if the god's permit, "the Millenium Falcon".

That would be the best Easter egg in the game... just some random encounter, i dont even care if i could blow it up (although i would like to plug one into the enterprise and kill jayneway once and for all!).

Um, yeah...

Not such a hot idea.

Yeah, agreed, Lecter.

Aside from the obvious copyright issues (the printed manual that comes with the boxed version of the game even says players aren't allowed to create/use copyrighted character names, but it's not enforced), there are two blatant errors in your post that I have to point out:

One: It's Janeway.

Two: Janeway's ship was called "Voyager", hence the series it was in being named "Star Trek Voyager".

Uh, yeah, doak. Not such a good idea.

thus the reason this is in the RP section and not game suggestions!

plus, janeway and her "voyager" i coulnt care less about, which is why i wouldnt mind shooting it down... all i really suggested are Easter eggs ala Fallout. ease up on the symantics... jeez.

Though if a Jayneway was flying a ship called the Enterprise would it be infringement?

drdoak007,

copywright laws can be circumvented (fair use, parodys, just hope you don't get cought, etc), but not in the way you sugested. At least not without getting permission from the respective copyright owners.

now i believe you could for example have "Hans Zolo, captain of the Aluminum Falcone", but i'm not 100% certain of that.
May 09, 2006 Dr. Lecter link
Yeah, that would probably be fine.
May 09, 2006 LeberMac link
Well, it would be fine as long as a PLAYER made the name, and the character and ship were not developed and put into the game by Guild Software.

Would you be upset if the new Star Trek show had a band of pirates called Corvus that flew Marauders and Vultures? I know Guild Software would be. (Or they'd at least like a little action off the top, if you catch my drift.)

Actually, that particular set of facts would probably not constitute infringement even if Guild integrated it into their product as a humorous parody, even though it was part of the product sold. Copyright doesn't protect against someone making money by making fun of your protected product; I could sell a spoof of The DaVinci Code, for example.

I can see it now... "The DaVinci Recipe"

Lol, was that the one where you have to fix the loose drive belt to get it to fly?
