Faction penalties and Friendly Fire

Nov 20, 2004 andreas link
I killed a UIT trader bot in Itani space today, because it was stuck against a roid. Without any warning, I lost -150 standing with Itani. The faction system is soo broken, its not funny any more. Also, UITs being green on my radar and not targetable is plain nuts. I was jumped by 3 UITs and had a hard time targeting them. This whole friendly/not friendly thing based on faction standing is just not working out.

You lost standing with Itani because they are semi-allies with UIT.

Any kills inside NoFire zone risk giving you a penalty beyond the temporary KOS.
(I know from killing itani in ineubis no-fire zone):

Killing anything "admired" in monitored/guarded space will kill your standing completely.

What I don't know, and don't dare find out is what happens if you kill a UIT in a UIT controlled but not monitored/guarded sector.

The faction system hasn't been tested or debugged properly, due to the permanent problems of doing it, and the longstanding response of getting things fixed. I'd love to experiment more, but will not waste my main character for it, and its not testable without enough work to actually be a wellequipped and well-predestined pilot in the various factions.

Catch-22.

The incident was in a WH area, but not near a station. Also, there was no warning that this bot had a high standing score with Itani.

in monitored space their faction standing with who's monitoring should be shown in the targetting. on a side note when someone fires on you but they are supposedly in good standing with your nation they should turn yellow or something and be easy to target and when in nation space if you kill someone from that nation you should be severly penalized, like -300 or something so UIT's cargo chasing in itani space would become enemies and itani or serco that pirate UIT space would become enemies.

oh and it should be up to the player whether they want to shoot someone in their own nation, not hard coded into the game that they can't.

I killed a UIT pirate within IT space in a non-monitored sector with another character. Lost 1100 points in standing (from +780 to -330) with UIT because he had still Admire status with UIT despite being KOS'd with other factions.

Andreas, perhaps this will bring you some comfort:
The other day, i warped out just in front of a guard bot turboing at full speed; the poor NPC instantly volatilized in the crash and i got a message like "Ineubis standing significantly decreased". Indeed, it went directly to -300 or so. Without shooting at all, without even a slightest chance to avoid it...
