Control lock problem.

Nov 26, 2004 Apex link
I've been frequently having a problem with my controls locking up. when i'm flying, sometimes i'll start uncontrolably straffing in some direction (usually the last direction I was going), and I won't be able to stop my ship. I use the default wsad + mouse config, except I like to use space and alt for straffing up and down. (ctrl for brake) I can't use the command button for mapping. and I think the command or alt buttons might have something to do with this. I might be hitting command accidentally and maybe that in combination with other keys causes the controls to freeze like that.
I've tried to reproduce the problem accurately and I can't seem to, all I can say is that it probably has something to do with ctrl, alt, command, and another key. I really hope we can figure this out, because it's causing me to die rather frequently.

Ah, this happened to me, but i found out it's due to my optical mouse giving up the ghost :( Make sure your mouse is working 100%

FYI: i'm on a G4 (or G5) running the latest version of OSX.

I don't know for sure if it's the mouse causing the trouble, I doubt it, but it's possible, I'll try another mouse tonight and see if it helps.

I know about the caps lock thing, I know that's not what i'm doing, I ran into the caps lock thing (or a station) much earlier in my career in this game.. :) It could have something to do with that Shift-key thing people were talking about in the thread linked above, although I can't reproduce the problem using the shift key alone.. I seem to have to use all three of those buttons that I referred to.

Could this be some kind of a USB data overload? Perhaps some driver or peripheral freaking out because i'm pressing too many keys? (this happens more when I'm usually straffing up, down, right, and left whilst moving backward and forward, rolling, braking and shooting..)

thanks and thanks in advance for the help!

On OS X it's almost certainly the caps lock issue. Once you turn off lock, hit the key for the direction you're uncontrollably going to cancel it.

I believe the way the caps-lock or shift-key thing works is when you press down a key, say 'k', it sends a +k, which will activate strafe for example. You will continue strafing until it gets the -k when the key goes up. But if you hit caps-lock while holding down the key, when you release it you will get a -K which doesn't do anything. Same with shift... anything that would make you lose that "turn off" signal could cause this.

USB has way more bandwidth than your keyboard can send, but I know I've had my PC beep at me when pressing too many keys during some games before. I'm not sure if it's something OS related, or somewhere else in hardware.
