Macintosh® Energy Saver Continues to Cause Crashes

Mar 02, 2005 DekuDekuplex link
On Mac OS X 10.2.8, engaging the energy saver in "System Preferences..." and putting the computer to sleep causes a severe crash, which can only be recovered by holding the power button for about five seconds. Force-quitting doesn't help, and since this crash causes a freeze, neither the mouse nor any of the keys work then, either.

Every time this happens, just to be safe, I need to run Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions and save the resulting reports, which takes about thirty minutes total.

This problem has already been reported in the thread "screen dimmer still crashes g4 imac" ( see http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/5/8970#103632 ), but hasn't been fixed.

This happens in other games too; the solution is to not put the computer to sleep while playing Vendetta.

On our 10.2.8 machine, if I set it to sleep after 1 minute, the screen blanks after 1 minute but the machine doesn't go to sleep.
The VO menu music still plays (I didn't log in, I just ran VO and let it sit in the login menu).

When your computer goes to sleep, does the music still play?

hi its me the screen dimmer guy. I never have my computer go to sleep automatically. when the screen dimmer kicks in (which is not user controlled, it just happens after a couple of minutes) the game crashes, but the music does continue. Just continues, and everything is unresponsive and the screen doesn't come back. This is the only game in which ive experienced this.

Hi,
I set the energy saver monitor setting to turn off the monitor after 1 minute and also set the computer to go to sleep after 1 minute and both tests didn't cause a system halt/crash. Moving the mouse brought VO back.
I wasn't able to get the screen saver to start while VO was running so I can't test to see if starting the screen saver causes a crash.

What exactly do you mean by screen dimmer?

On laptops the screen will turn down its brightness to save battery power/screen life. It isn't put to sleep and applications can continue to run in the bg. I've never left my computer alone long enough in vendetta to know if in fact there is a bug, but I will try it out later today and post my results.

So, silentsuicide, did you ever try it out?
