Server Overload

May 03, 2005 Person link
I don't know if anyone else has thought of this, or how were going to deal with it, or wether this should be a bug or a suggestion. But right now, the server can only handle so many. During the Ultimate Cap Ship Battle, I came to realise, that if this game is ever going to expand, which when the time comes, it will definitely do, it's going to need some new server-client exchange methods. In B8, my fps dropped below 10, and stayed there for the length of my visit. When I left to repair, the fps, (sorry, I forgot to check my ping), was slightly better. ranging from 15-30. My normal is 150 or above. Anyway, something's got to be done if this game is to make the market. Any ideas?

Yeah, the lag with 40+ players and 3 cap ships is INSANE.

well it's already ON the market, but your right, I was in that battle and it was VERY laggy and is STILL very laggy. Hopefully the devs can optimize some stuff and streamline other stuff to make it as quick as possible. I'm sure they are aware of this and are at least milling ideas over at meetings. [one can only hope, since wiki is still not up and no update or in-progress has been forthcoming]

FPS has exactly nothing to do with network issues. Furthermore, I've been in much larger battles than that without any network issues. As you've heard, the server does fine with several hundred cap ships fighting amongst themselves. I'm sure it can handle a few more players.

sure 100 cap ships being exported to the local monitor from the server, but not over the overseas network. I'd like to see that!!!!

This is more a "can your computer take the strain on rendering the screen" for every frame. If you were having trouble fighting with a smooth FPS, you should turn down the graphics options.

That again has nothing whatsoever to do with the server. This game uses extremely little bandwidth and has the least latency problems (unless you happen to be a cogentco parterner) of most. That's one of the things that most of the reviews scored it very highly on.

well then, how do we deal with this problem? is just a, "tough it or get a better comp" situation?

well, turn down screen resolution ingame, and turn down scene detail, as well as turning other basic graphics options down. I dunno what you've done already, so I can't say too much more.

Oh, if the FPS is my old G4 processor and sucky graphics card, than I'll stop whining. But people were also bouncing like heck.

Yay, I have somethinig else to whine about now:)

The server can not handle a large amount of bots that are active, you can see this when a cap ship goes into an ion storm, the server is piloting all the turrets and the cap ship, along with all the bots in that sector. The sector process becomes unhappy.

During the last great cap ship battle. I was only lagging a little. My ping was aboyt 50 before the battle started jumped to 200 when the UIT and serco ships arrived and went back to 50 after about 5 min.
Next time i'll be sure to check my fps.

It is possible for the devs to remedy low FPS perfomance in graphic-intensive scenes using varying leves of rendering detail. There's 30 years worth of solutions they are probably well aware of. I'm sure it's somewhere deep down on their implementation priority list. :)

fps issues in this game are not tied to lag. In some games yes, this one, no. Turn down the distance it shows things if fps is a problem.

Or buy a semi-recent video card
Vendetta runs awesome on even old hardware, so if you're struggling, time to upgrade. It is a game, after all....

margoth: Like the scene/distance LOD sliders? Yeah... FPS issues in this game only crop up if you do dumb settings.

lag seriously seems like a time-of-day thing. I've seen 2x more lag during a capship fight where there were only about 3 people in the sector.

In capship battle 2 I only suffered minimal lag. I was at least able to kill capship turrets without swarms or rockets. When i'm having a bad lag day, I have a hard time hitting the capship at all without it bouncing out of the way.
