Derelicts and Mysteries

It seems Vendetta is in a major stage of content-addition. As I understand it, the Dev's main tasks right now are, creating and implementing the hive, reforming the guild system, creating a more active (or perhaps reactive) economy.

I think this stuff is great, and can't wait to see it all implemented. These seem to be some core features of the Vendetta game, but once these are implemented, I think adding strange details to our universe would make it even more exciting.

I'm thinking extraneous systems outside of the sphere of the nations—derelict stations that could hold possible secrets, spacial phenomena, what have you. I stumbled across this story on the EVE-website and it inspired me: http://www.eve-online.com/background/potw/03-july-01.asp

Maybe the lot of us are in this game for PvP and combat, but I think it'd be great to have an exploratory aspect of this game, a vastness that allows players to investigate strange, rumor-like claims of beatiful fleet-wreckages that are (supposedly) thousands of years old, back when the Serco had a civil war, stuff like that. Add floating temples in Itani space—old arena-like dueling structures in Serco space. Race tracks are one example of these things.

These are details, but details that could give the game great depth and beauty. It's more of an artistic touch, but it'd attract players who don't simply want to duel, trade, and do CtC all day. We obviously need to add things like the Hive, work on Capital ships and stuff, and I think that'd be wonderful. But after that, these are some things would give the game much more intrigue, and perhaps tie the backstory more into what we see in-game.

Yes, absolutely! We need more evidences that the universe is not brand new, and have stuff like the old dueling arenas in serco space, as well as things like the Goliath Cannons on the border. Everything is not fine and dandy, war has been raging for a *long* time.

Besides, when somebody is tired of PvP, there is currently not all that much else to do, except trade or mine.

Edit:

Following Seraph's concept of including details into the game, I'd like to bring this post I made a while ago to the surface:

What I really don't understand, is why we don't have weapon and outfit descriptions. There should be a paragraph long description of each weapon, it's history, and it's uses. Also, we should have a short description of each station upon landing there, perhaps in it's own box in a new tab on the screen. EV Nova did an excellent job of this, and to show what I'm really talking about here, I'll post an example:

Spacedock II
Spacedock II is the headquarters for the Federation Navy's logistics department. The base is also utilized as a secondary repair and outfitting facility with the shipyards on the Kane Band around Earth being primary. Materials and parts produced on Viking below are shipped up and assembled on base. However, the primary purpose of this base is to provide a home for the people who have to keep track of the Federation military on a day-to-day basis. An occasional Auroran skirmish keeps the pilots and gunners of Spacedock II on their toes, as the Auroran commanders see Spacedock II as a potential "weak point" along the Federation border.

Here's an example of the text for a Civillian Infared Missile Jammer:

Just traveling the space lanes can be dangerous, what with the pirates as well as the Aurorans and the Federation fighting. So it never hurts to have a little insurance against some of their long range attacks to give you some time to get away. This simple system merely fires a low-power laser into the IR sensor of the incoming missile, hopefully burning it out. The technology is still a little bit hit-and-miss, but it sure beats nothing.

Now, we really ought to have some sort of description for these weapons, and preferrably an extended version of the current ship description. However, this would require a larger text-box on the station screen, as well as a "Welcome to %station%!" area, which would give you information about the station and it's history. While all of the stations may look nice and shiny, people's perceptions can be changed pretty easily by simply saying something along the lines of "This station has been contested for years, and subject to many various incursions by the serco. Blast marks are visible nearly everywhere on the exterior, and the rugged life of those who live here is indeed noticable"

[/extract]

Please?

Man, it'd be wonderful if there were stories/descriptions to places and outfits, but *especially* places. In EV Nova, the Auroran Empire was a huge mass of systems and, along its border, each mini-station was named "Techerakh's End" or some name like that, and gave a whole history of the significant battle that happened there. And these were stations that offered you absolutely nothing, but you sat there and read the desc. because it was so interesting. Turned boring trade runs into adventures into unknown space.

There were lots of strange, mysterious phenomena in Nova—glowing, space-faring organisms that supposedly fed on stars, derelict battle cruisers that couldn't be destroyed, no matter how long you shot at them, in the farthest corners of space.

Derelict stations could also be out in gray-space sectors, next to dangerous spacial phenomena. They could look half-destroyed and blackened, even with the holographic billboards flickering, but pilots could still land on them (perhaps at their own risk), and use them as secret staging places or just things to read the long description about what happened to the station. Perhaps gray space should be expanded to encompase the other systems, or the whole universe doubled-up a little, so that you've got your main trade routes, but then outlying, lonely systems that hold unknown adventures and mysteries.

Granted, this would take some time to create, but I'm thinking *after* the Hive, after Guild reformation, and after all this "core" content is made. That would give players things to do in the meantime while Devs can have a field day (I suppose) being creative in the universe they've already made.

A lot of the station and system descriptions could be pulled straight out of the backstory. Like, where did the big duel happen between the Serco and Itani leaders? Where were the Itani pilots rescued by the Order of Akan? Just mentioning who/what things are named after would help, too. "Eo's Patience", anyone?

And derelicts, space phenomenon, and so on would be really really cool, even if they were just eye candy. More "special" stations, like the two UIT stations inside roids, would also help a lot. The universe is way too same-looking at the moment.

They could start by just making copies of some minor station, putting them in Grey Space, and taking away its docking bays and defenders.

Later, they could add in damage effect, new coloring, docking capabilities with only a description and the leave command, or whatever else they can think of

This is great idea. Tho, the idea of derelicts dont need to limit on stations only, but cool feat in EVN is the derelict spaceships, which sometimes are just empty so you can rob them, set as a trap to alarm pirate-party that you're there, or there's crew still twiddling their thumbs that jump on the roof when you arrive and ask that you take them to home and offer noticeable payment from it.

And Seraph, the derelict in the far empty corner with the mystical planet... It could be destroyed. Just need to keep shooting it long enough.

i whole heratedly agree, but i'd also like to see some encouragment to explore the "empty" secters of the current systems. maybe every once in a while a distress call could come over an emergency channel, something like "This is <NPCx> i've lost power in secter Y, please assist". then if you go you could finde a derelect ship swarming with bots, or a disabled ship willing to pay hansomly if you will repare them, or maybe a pirat ambush, etc.

also the devs could plant derelect stations in existing secters without having to expand the universe (yet). since the universe is prety sparsly populated as it is.

quick comment- i have been on VO for 1 month now- and am engulfed- but am already seeing that VO has such potential to be vast with content- but i think i have a different point of view concerning separph's comment that "most of us are in it for the PvP" but I am not---as many others arent- i learn my combat for defense and want to EFFECT the universe in whatever way i can maybe not thru combat-?!? - so i just want to voice a concern that VO should not focus it's developement with a slant on PvP or combat in general-- for whatever that means--may i just say that VO has been a great experience and will continue to be as long as developement continues within the universe--

Yes. If anything, we're missing dësc's (read "descriptions").
