"Cancel Subscription" Comment Box

Jun 24, 2005 tboyz007 link
Just recently, I began playing another MMORPG. It sucked, so I cancelled my subscription to it. However, on the "cancel subscription" page, there was a box in which to write why you ended your subscription, and it was sent to the makers of the game.

I think this would be really helpful for VO. I mean, you guys (devs) already do everything you can to imput user-thought-of content, so why not get some suggestions from people who are quitting the game? Odds are that most people leaving the game are leaving for similar reasons, yet those reasons may be surprising. With this comment box, you wouldn't have multiple players leaving for the same reason.

Also, it would provide a good luck at exactly why n00bs are leaving. I've noticed that many n00bs don't pay after their 8hrs, despite the attempt to convince them to stay by players in-game. Also, these n00bs would probably not take the time to post why they left on these boards. A comment box on the page would be really easy to do, and you'd get lots of responses. I think it would be extremely beneficial, to both keep players from leaving, and to make the game better for those that are already subscribed.

While I don't know how many n00bs there are coming in and burning their trial, I do see a fair number of them posting complaints

I've had the misfortune of seeing comments from players who have left the game. They submitted bug reports via the web bug reporter.
These people are not masters of constructive criticism.

The majority of the comments are along the lines of
"your game sucks",
"#$%@$ you",
"I'm gonna tell my friends to never play this game.'
I'm going to give this game 1 out 100 on every game site I can find"
The most popular closing statement was "put that in your pipe and smoke it."

The closest they get to construcitve criticism is:
"Get some better graphics" and "why do I have to pay for this game".

The players who are able to give real constructive criticism make their way to the message board.

Another option would be to not have it an open-ended text box, but allow the cancelling players to answer specific questions about why they were canceling. Then they can't go off on tirades, but Guild Software might be able to get useful information on what potential subscribers find most lacking.

Sarahanne, welcome to the internet, heh. You'll get those hordes of little internerds(tm) anywhere. Despite the occasional hiccup, VO has one of the most mature online gaming communities I have ever seen, both in game and on the forum.

Just take a look at the messageboards from WoW, how often does someone make a suggestion there that is seriously discussed?

I think that's why I like to read these boards.

well, gee, hop in a time mech, and look at me in 3.2 :)

I'v been called "mature" tons of times in-game... and it's kinda' odd, really. sometimes there is shock when I spill the beans, and admit, I'm 13. pfffle :(

Chronlogical age doesn't assure maturity. You can be mature beyond your years and immature for your age.

I know some very mature 15 and 16-yr olds. However I know more immature teens.

Rather, I think you mean that VO has several mature players who participate on the forum. There are, however, players who simply don't know how to respond constructively to another player's post. These players usually respond with a single line comment that adds nothing to the thread, and generally creates a negative environment for the poster, and/or those in support of the poster.

It's the above "attitude" (I suppose this is what it boils down to) that has recently prompted me, and, maybe others (I don't know) to refrain from posting here.

Is that the sort of forum VO should have?

[edit]I am not bashing single line comments. Rather, those that are responsible for the above generally tend to utilize a single line comment as a medium to abate what another player is trying to say.[/edit]
