double-click

Jul 18, 2005 gshyland link
Why not be able to double-click something instead of selecting it and moving the mouse over to a "do-it" button off in the corner somewhere? Is it an OS thing? I'm using AMD / WinXP so I'm used to double-clicking, but I'm ignorant about Mac OS.

Example: in station, Articles tab, list of articles. You click one, then go down to click the "Read Article" button on the lower right. Why not just double-click the title? Extra seek time is un-ergonomic.

...What the heck, why not assume the player wants to read it when they click it?

I agree. Also, double-clicking (or ctrl-clicking, or something) on WH sectors on a system's navmap should switch to the navmap for the system on the other side of the WH. It's a pain to have to zoom out, select the other system, and zoom in again.

Big thumbs up!

Stamp of Approval.

and no, it's not an OS thing.

Yes. I thought this was an OS thing, so I never suggested it. However, it's really annoying to not be able to double click stuff, and it detracts from the overall "fun" factor if the interface isn't easy and fast.

Well, the different OSes do report double-clicks differently, but it shouldn't be difficult to handle all of them.

well i can garantee that mac OS should be able to support double clicking (after all Microsoft bought the rights to use double clicking and similar features from Apple) But chances are the code for buttins is either easier to write or easier to port, or posably both.

i think that double clicking is probably unesasary for most functions but it would definately be nice for the zome to system and swithching from one system to the system a perticular wormehole goes to would be nice.

The new and improved interface code Ray's working on now supports double-click. Once we re-do the interface with the new stuff, it'll support double-clicking.

a1k0n, if its not too late or too difficult to do, have you also considered draggable icons for the new interface? They are a beautiful thing.

Drag from station menu to inventory = buy
Drag from inventory to station = sell
Drag from inventory to ship = equip (or load)
Drag from ship to inventory = unequip (or unload)
Drag from station menu to ship = buy and equip
Drag from ship to station = unequip and sell

This could all be done from the same window(s) with no need for extra navigation between tabs. I'll try making a simple mock up sometime to show what I mean.

We've always wanted drag n' drop, although that hasn't come up yet in Ray's new interface work. I'm pretty sure we will have it though.

Yay! GUI (good user interface. :P) = essential.

While on the topic of GUIs, have you considered a libaa graphics driver?

New station interface. Does this mean we will finally be able to walk around in stations and stuff ; )

If by that you mean dragging 2D paper-cutout sprites of pilots around on a high res picture of a station's interior, then yes.

Do you want people to go blind Solra?

Solra: Use xvidcap, then mplayer -vo aa. Slight lag, but whatever. :P
