Gov't issued weapons are all the same?

Jul 25, 2005 Phaserlight link
Why is it that the Serco, Itani, and UIT all share the same government issued weapons? I agree that player choices over the course of the game should have more to do with character development than what nation you start as, but shouldn't there be at least a slight difference between the three nations when starting out? Why not have a different government issued weapon for each nation? It's really a simple matter but I think it would go a long way toward player first impressions.

Balance wouldn't really be a huge issue provided each weapon was a step below the plasma cannon mkII. Most new players ditch the gov't issued gun as soon as they can afford the more expensive one anyway.

But since I know there would be some hard core players that would hate to lose their classic govbus, my suggestion is to present the player with two options: the govbus classic and the govbus nation special. The only difference would be the weapon they come with.

Here are the alternate gov't issued weapons I propose:

Itani: the itani are pacifistic explorers, their government weapons would be fast and effecient, albiet somewhat less powerful.

Itani Standard Issue Phased Blaster:
Damage: 300
Energy: 9
Delay: .25
Velocity: 160

UIT: the UIT are enterpreneurs, whatever it takes to get the job done. Their government weapons would be down and dirty, rapid firing, if somewhat less effecient.

UIT Standard Issue Ion Blaster:
Damage: 340
Energy: 13
Delay: .15
Velocity: 140

Serco: the Serco are warriors, hard hitting but slow moving. Their weapon would put a lot of hurt on the target but would be difficult to land and have a slow refire.

Serco Standard Issue Charged Cannon:
Damage: 0-3000
Time to charge fully: 8s (375/s)
Velocity: 120

It looks good to present the player with some choices right off the bat, such as a choice of starting ships, and it also looks good to have those choices be a little different for each starting nation... particularly with each nation as diverse as they are portrayed in the backstory.

Well... comments, critiques, flames, alternate suggestions?

Agreed

Massive thread necromancy there FreedomBird, but I agree too.

However, I'd like to see them be a little closer together.
Give them a base value of what the govt issue blaster is now, and give UIT a velocity bonus, Serco a damage bonus and Itani a fireing rate bonus?

I think they should have different graphics also... graphics are what make the biggest impression on a new player first starting out.

I agree, but how does a Serco newbie know that his Red Gun would have been Yellow Gun if he was UIT?

it would really need some re-tweaking. calculate the damage/sec and you'll see a real big inballace, as described.

dps isn't the only thing to consider... first strike potential is huge. A 3,000 damage blast is enough to take out an orun collector in a single shot. Also keep energy effeciency and shot velocity in mind.

@Demonen: I'm assuming most new players will create more than one character to try out the different nations. I suggested these weapons in an attempt to foreshadow the "character" of each nation, giving the new player a taste of which nation suits him/her best.

Yes.
Because this would change everything.

here is a crazy addon to this idea, replace the EC-88 model with the model for the Centurian for the Itani, the Vulture for the Serco, and keep the EC-88 for the UIT.

all of theses "new ships" would have the stats of the curent EC-88, but they would add visual diversity to the game, and help forshadow the nation specific ships later on.

I know when i first started playing, i made alts for all the nations to see who's ships looked the collest, when i found they were all the same i stuck with UIT because of their better starting faction.

anyone who wants a clasic EC-88 can get one from any UIT afiliat station, but all of us who nlike nation diversity get a token reward.

Perhaps a slight weapons rebalancing, but as they are all clearly less-good than purchased weapons, I do not consider this particularly important. I am also all for Lord Q's model change-up suggestion.
