Forlarren, I play way too much, and I'm glad my post was taken as a statement of that (sad) fact. :-)

I have absolutly no interest in making pirating easy. the day pirating becomes easy, I'll probably trade again. heh. my main reason for taking speed over armor is as Beolach has suggested that it'll live longer, giving escorts the possibility of actually helping it. as for a game design view, I'd really like to see Serco and Itani space be safer (I'd like to see it practically impossible to pirate there) to trade in, especially as soon as you're past the border systems. UIT space is a bit more iffy, some (minor) risk will exist since the systems are fewer and have more borders. while grey, grey should be something traders actually think about entering with a cargo hold full of valuable stuff.

to achieve this the trade vessels must be balanced to a point where they have to be possible to hunt down, and at the same time, the defense in monitored space must be better. although, even with the current defenses, a modified moth will be quite safe in monitored space. pirates who are willing to kill in monitored space probably have a bad standing, and pirating with even todays SF on your butt is hard.

as I've said before though, I'd like to see it so anyone damaging another ship more than a few hundred points (to allow for collisions etc) in monitored get a SF called out on them. no matter the standings of people involved.

To suggest that a pirate should have a 0% chance of ever succeeding is even more arrogant.
