Asteroid shunting.

I was thinking...

Would it be possible to make a ship that had such Turbo thrust that it could safely move a asteroid? The other possibility could be that there is some cable or laser that can be used as a device to move the rocks. Of course the gargantaun rock would take time to be moved anywhere but think of the possibilities. Instead of using the ideas of markers/buoys. There is the possibility of making landmarks out of asteroids and this ability can be used on the offensive. If someone was chasing you, all that would be needed is that you fly into an asteroid field and pull some rocks together to form a cocoon or rock to protect yourself. This ability can also be used as a mining tactic. Towing certain asteroids together to make mining faster and/or draging them to stations or empty sectors for private extraction.

Does this sound possible and what should be changed?

Well, if the asteroids can be moved then that's a big deal to get it working, methinks.

If it CAN be done, then I think having moving asteroids in-sector would be quite awesome, as long as they come back eventually (Like, once they hit 50,000 m they either bounce off an invisible barrier or they warp to the opposite side of the sector, 50,000 m away, keeping their momentum intact.

Then we could do the comet idea, in that other thread. It could move thru the sector at a heightened pace.

It should be easy to repel asteroids with some kind of repulsor-beam if we do this. Stations will need these to avoid being pummeled.

Or, perhaps the stations could move and rotate? To avoid the HUGE asteroids? Or maybe they want to stay next to the large asteroid so they move where IT moves?

Neat idea, but I think it'll just create server lag (keeping track of MANY MANY more objects) and not create lots more fun.

Roids as buoys?

Sounds like overkill.

Proper buoys should be cargo-able. Purchasable from stations.

Besides, you'd never be able to fit the roids properly to make an impervious shield.

It's ratter have an asteroid belt that circles around a station than being able to move them around. I'd like for the roids to rotate though. It's always nice to see a couple move around ratter than all being static.

Moving asteroids could be used by pirates or other partisans to create large areas, you can not jump out.

Although somewhat interesting, this suggestion would IMO require far to much development time to be worth the increase in content.

Agreed, LostCommander.... buuuuut... It might a more functional idea if players were only able to move certain sizes of asteroids, and only VERY VERY slowly. But you'd probably have to have them not having any momentum after replacing them... or else, like Leber said, would just create too much server strain, and then you'd have the whole issue with roids hitting stations. If asteroids were easily moveable... then you'd have the whole issue of everyone bringing their favorite small mining asteroid right in front of the station. EVERY station, knowing the capacity of game players to be ridiculous. Or just making retarded designs (smiley faces, etc.) out in random space.

Hmmm, a couple of Big Ol' Rocks right in front of all the M-14 station exits. Excyllent. Muwahahaha!

imagin how ticked off miners would get when they realized somone moved their favorat 'roid.

i'd realy rather players not be able to move 'roids just because of the "retarded designs" issue.

Yeah, but if the devs implement this we'll have to have like 50 times more roids in order to fill up the sector, and we'll have to have some beacon-system to mark 'em.
