Giant Hollow Roids
I've heard similar things suggested in passing before, but how about some giant roids that have tunnels in them? I image they'd be somewhere between 500 and 10,000 meters in diameter.
They could have a few tunnel entrances and a few large chambers inside. There would obviously need to be some sort of illumination inside (or give us headlights).
The surface could have canyons, mountains, and craters on it. Maybe a few stations or turrets too.
They would be primarily for mining. Give us some really valuable ores that can only be mined from deep inside. Pirates could easily hide, in any of many dark tunnels or just in the shadows, and hunt miners. Maybe radar doesn't work or is limited inside.
There could be a station or stations inside as well. There shouldn't be station guards though (so people can fight inside and outside the roid).
A bunch of these could be scattered throughout the universe. People want to land on planets, but that would be much more difficult. The perspective we see planets from puts them days away (or more) even at constant boost. Plus, these are much much smaller (no gravity). This would be cool for the people who want to fly down to planets, and would avoid most of the problems that are preventing it from being implemented.
