Shared Group Radar

Aug 30, 2006 LostCommander link
All group members in a single sector should have a shared radar perspective (i.e. be able to target anything targetable by any single member of the group and see the distance etc. in the 'u' shiplist that would show up in any group members solo 'u' shiplist). We could either simply not see such far away ships on our own radar or maybe we could have a new symbol for ship targets that are only available because of a group member (because the distance would mean the target's alpha value would be maxed).

Good idea.

A similar concept was used in a series of Star Wars novels. X-Wing pilots would slave their targeting telemetry to a large group of freighters, which had launchers but no targeting sensors. The freighters would use the targeting data to fire off missiles from a safe distance, allowing 12 X-Wings making an attack run to get off hundreds of torpedoes and missiles.

Frankly, I like this idea -- it might breathe some life into guided weaponry. Have your guild's hottest pilot zipping around a HAC in a Cent, dodging as best as it can, while the rest of the guild sits a few kilometers out and fires off wave after wave of missiles.

Another idea might be radar buoys in major station areas. Members of the same nation as the station would have the benefit of the vastly expanded radar range, while nonaligned/enemy players/NPCs will not. For strategic purposes, maybe enemies can partially "blind" the sector by finding and destroying the buoys, and if the station successfully defends itself from attack then missions could become available to replace the buoys.

Maybe, Professor Chaos, but toss that elsewhere in a station stuff thread. PLEASE, I am trying to keep this suggestion VERY simple so that there is some possiblity of it being implemented.

Neat. This would introduce new strategies, like U.S. Carrier Battle Groups sending out EC-3's to "paint" targets for radar-guided surface-to-surface missiles, allowing the ships to attack from far over the horizon.

This would be incredibly valuable when we have larger "capital-class" engagements between groups of Tridents, Teradons, and HAC's. Assuming that new ship-to-ship weapons are introduced that have longer ranges and can benefit from point scouts.
