Orientation, Orientation, Orientation!

One of the biggest shortfalls in this game from a piloting perspective is the lack of useful indications on position, orientation and direction.

Would it be possible for the developers to include for each defined sector a XYZ position grid readout and a basic direction indication based around an arbitrary spacial reference to Up, Down, North, East, South, West.

This would make all aspects of space flight far more precise including mining, escorting, trading and combat.

You call it the biggest shortfall, I call it one of its many degrees of freedom.

Seriously, I like how Vendetta Online allows you to orientate yourself in whatever way you wish. If there was an euclidian (polar,… you name it) coordinate system forced upon the player base, I would not be one to welcome it, since it limits the players, simply by providing something to 'stick to'.

/DisplayShipPos ->> /DisplaysHippos - Very funny LOL!!!

My suggestion still stands it appears!

Toshiro:

I agree that the lack of it provides wider sense of freedom and that sense of freedom IS a big plus-point to the game, but that plus-point can be maintained by keeping the displays and indicators fairly simple by design.

I know what you mean about how if it's hyper-obvious it will just 'lineate' people's gameplay, but a small X: Y: Z: readout in the corner of the screen and maybe a rotating sphere display in the bottom centre, where the eight quarters of the ball are coloured/shaded uniquely, would be a very low tech solution which would not have that undesired effect.

At least that way you could break off from the direction you are going in to deal with an attacker and quickly resume your previous direction again, or when mining in a huge asteroid field, remember which way you were heading before you spun around to scan the contents of a localised clump of rocks without ending up heading back in the direction you came from and getting a mile further on before realising these are the same rocks you mined half an hour ago! :-)

we use to have that sping, but it sparked the interest of bots.

reason why /displayshippos should not work anymore, well at least it didn't work a year or so ago...

We did have this, but it was abused by players who made self-navigating bots for profit. Frankly, it was not especially user-friendly for live pilots.

We may get a less-precise version in the future - something that would get you in the ballpark, but not in a specific seat.
