a planet sized station.

Nov 09, 2006 drdoak007 link
what is the difficulty level in building a planet sized station?

something that can be accessed from 4 different sectors, but also fun enough to fly in and out of it's crevasses.

and NO, it doesnt have to be planet shaped, NOR does it have to be a big ass cube.

just a massive station. with all the funds that these stations shell out, shouldnt some of these corps have vast fortunes? ones big enough to build the biggest damned stations imaginable?

it has always been man's obsession to out-do their neighbour.

the problem is frame rate.

the more complex an object, the more time/power it requires to display.

granted, if said station was in asteroid-free area it might have a chance.

i've been thinking it might be fun to incorporate race track elements with stations. aka, to dock, you have to follow a tube down the crevasse of an asteroid to reach a large station at the center.

imagine a super-sized asteroid or cluster of asteroids with a large station at the center. you get to the center core through the tubes. useless but fun and perty!

i've also wanted asteroid-sized micro station (mostly for guilds and advanced outposts), such as an asteroid with an entry dock. here's a picture i once cooked up to illustrate the idea:

i absolutely love that concept for guild-owned stations. though it's quite the contrary to what you're proposing.

Re-introduce the small docks, they were exit and entry at the same time.

We basically need to somewhat alter our rendering technology to make this sort of thing work effectively. It's something I've always wanted.. if you read the backstory carefully, you'll see the UIT "homeworld" is basically a gigantic station, which I wanted to be.. very large in the game universe. But, one does what one can with the tech / development time available. That said, I haven't given up on that any more than I have on anything else, but it's not a huge priority right now, compared to the many gameplay mechanics we need to add and general universe / balance issues that need addressing.
